Experience as many cars as you can. I really really wanted one as well but once I'd actually bought one I realised how not-that-much-like a £20k car it really felt once i lived with it day to day. It was just.. some nice 3 Series. Rather than feeling like an expensive car. Despite being 7 years newer than my 5 Series it felt like I'd stepped down a class - all the improvements over the 5 Series were simply the expected technology upgrades you'd get by moving forward a generation.

A point Fox made, you can only get two people in the back of a coupe E9x (not even sure there is a 5th seatbelt).
This happens a lot on new cars now due to some EU regulations about having to get 5 people out of a 2 door, 3 door car in the event of an accident (roll over, head-on, etc).
If you need to ever carry 3 people in the back, you'll need a saloon.
A4 cab as an "almost ran" alternative?

4 seater/3 passengers is fine. Just I found out I needed that seat at the back lately so unfornately the Z4 no longer fit the bill unless I buy one as a seoncd car, I still might, I mean if I can get a nice soft top, might work out cheaper than running a single £17k E92.
The A4 cab is not a hard top is it? Hmmmm, may be, if I am. Getting a soft top (changing my criteria again) then it opens up a lot more options.
If I get a E92 I will only have 1 car.

Yup, I've never seen one, or I may have but never pay attention to them because tbh...BMW 3 series is not exactly rare.

Err what on earth are you on about, its nothing to do with regulations, its simply because the design of the car is such that there is a storage compartment instead of a seat in the middle!
