Will start buy saying it's not for me :p

A friend has decided he needs some V8 in his life (for £10k) and was mulling around the usual American stuff.

I, partly joking, said "how about an 840ci" as he likes BMWs but doesnt want a 5/7 and obviously there's no V8s in the 3.

He hadn't even heard of them but having looked at the ads, he wants one..badly.

So, I'd feel terrible if he took my passing remark seriously and bought one, to find it was a pile of junk. So, the usual - what to look out for, what goes wrong, any fun facts etc.

I love the BMW 8 series.

That is all.

edit: I'm sure that there was a guide in TG magazine a couple of years ago about buying an 8 series.

Awesome cars, certainly a future classic, dated to look at and hugely expensive to run. A real enthusiasts car, so the fact he didnt even know they existed means its probably not the sort of car for him. Its a bit of a labour of love owning an 8 Series.

What do the huge running costs generally consist of? Obviously fuel is quite expensive (he's coming from a 406 coupe HDi 2.2) but he was only quoted 500 on insurance.

He's very much into cars, he's the sort that would lavish it and do everything absolutely perfectly. He didn't know about it because it's not the sort of car he's ever looked at really, not through general ignorance. I'm sure he did know they existed, probably just forgot about them :)

It's a supercar, so when it breaks it will cost a fortune to fix.

I have to admit I feel a bit of a trouser tingle when I see a picture of one. I don't recall ever seeing one on the road though..

Are they built on a more common platform (such as the e39) or are they built from the ground up as-is?

Well, his has V12 so it must be the larger one. :p

It has to be said, German V8s are nothing like America V8s, much smoother in comparison, not as burbly etc.

saw one in somerfield before, it was AWESOME. they aint slow either.

IN somerfield. That is drive through shopping at its best, I would love an 8series of any sort, but the running costs just always seem so astronomical!
