So I have been looking for a new series and finally settled on TWD. Now I have finished the first season and tbh I'm really not that in to it. I just find it all relentlessly bleak...to the point where it becomes boring and predictable. There is nothing to get excited about, as every time there is a possibility of someone dying, they do, or something going wrong, and it does. A great series should have you excited to watch the next episode to see what will happen, but with this, I just find myself indifferent with only the mildest interest in who will die in the next episode(cos that is all the show is really)...who's turn will it be next week to cry over a dead body?!

I also find a lot of the (long)conversations characters have seem to miss the note they were going for, and have very little emotional impact.

Is it worth sticking with it? Does it get better?

Cheers

Hmm, this doesn't bode well, as the second series is slower and lots of people didn't like it. Series 3 was great, though.

Hey, you can't like everything. I gave up on Boardwalk Empire after the first series.

I really enjoyed the first season, but it gets much bleaker...

A fair few slow patches too. I've not watched the current season, but will catchup at some point when I can binge the whole series, as imo it's a bit slow otherwise.

That said, there are some pretty cool storylines and interactions with other surviving communities. Definitely not a feel good show though :p

I don't think I have ever given up on a series!

I'll probably give season 2 a few episodes to win me over, but the relentlessness of the bleakness is really not something that appeals to me.

To be fair though, I came very close to giving up on Agents of Shield, but that really picked up, so it ain't over yet!

Edit- Now I remember, The Killing. I gave up on that. Awful show.

Season 2 is the worse so far, it does pick up from season 3 onwards.
Would say stick with it just don't expect anything special with 2, and don't judge the rest of the seasons from the first couple of episodes of season 2.

Season 5 sucks and I haven't bothered watching the last few episodes even though I have them recorded. And have no enthusiasm to watch them either, pretty sure I'm done.

Another American series they tried stretching out to far, rather than realising what it was and finishing it off in a timely manner.

Its a very hit and miss show - when its good I love it and I still wait impatiently for the next episode but far too much of it is relentlessly bleak or tedious.

I really enjoyed the first series. The rest of it... blah. Some of the Governor stuff was good though.

I'm not normally one for comics and such but the Walking Dead comics are both awesome and infinitely superior to the TV series.

Just started the first episode of season two. A little girl has gone missing... Let's just say I am not wondering whether they will find her alive or not!

I quite liked the show.
I think you should give it a few more episodes.

If you don't like it, then at least you gave it a go.

If you wasnt bothered about the first series, I would just leave it as it gets worse : p

I just watch it now as I feel like I may as well see it through to the end.

Read the comics as they are 100x better than the TV show.

I thought the first season was complete guff.

It was big standard, predictable, basic zombie apocalypse **** and I had no intention of ever watching it again.

My wife got me back into it after she had finished season 3 so I gave it another go.... Wow! I love the show more than any other now. It has its quiet moments but even then the tension is masterfully worked by the fact they've moved away from end of season, dramatic death scenes into "**** can hit the fan anytime" mode and the series massively benefits from this.

I think it's great, yes there are slow moments but that is infinitely preferable to repetitive gun fights with zombies on cyclical repeat.

Great show, stick with it!

Like people have said it's a very hit n miss show. Also, people seem to have vastly differing opinions about what seasons they prefer. I like the show quite a lot and will see it through to the end, but there's been many times (more times than any other show I've watched) where I thought, I can't be bothered with this anymore. If you didn't like season 1 I'm 99% sure you won't enjoy the other seasons as season 1 is the best. On that basis, I would give up now. :(

My season rating would probably go
1
5
4
3
2

The bleakness is what it's all about, it's the core of the show, what are you expecting? Rambo gunning down zombies for 40mins every week before an encore glee style?

The show has took a realistic (as you can considering itsna zombie apololypse :p) view of the state of the world post societal breakdown and of course it should be bleak!

Pointless deaths, unexpected deaths, dumb deaths would all happen regularly in such circumstances. Despair, rage, fear, sadness, futility would all be the over riding emotions with those moments of joy rare but really appreciated.

The show captures this perfectly, it's more a judgement on your character (and perhaps expectations going in) whether or not you like the show, but I struggle to see how some can question its quality.

That goes for about 90% of US series. :p

Thats all well and good but some episodes take what is about 5 minutes worth of that and stretch it over the whole episode - even half an episode I could deal with. Often those bits are restricted to a limited amount of location or locations - I want to see a bit more of the practical side, exploration, etc. as well.
