I agree though it is ashame to lose them from the high street they have always been struggling since I can remember. They lost the CD/DVD market to HMV, consumer electronics to well high street competitors of OcUK. As a newsagent they where always behind WH Smith. Places like Toys'r'us have dominated the toy market, and with all that lower cost places like Wilkinsons have been attacking their market share for a while. They have no USP, no reason to be on the high street and whilst it's sad to see them go, unfortunately it's just their time to disappear :(

Supermarkets do pretty much everything woolies do, apart from pick&mix. I don't see them surviving.

Supermarkets do EVERYTHINg these days though.

Woolies needs to specialise more. The one in South Shields does bits of everything. It used to do great homewares etc, but now concentrates on sweeties and toys. So I dont even bother looking anymore.

Yeah, I was trying to think of the last thing I bought from Woolies and failed. They're just average at everything and as things get more competitive, they can't survive.

Again, I think their time has come.

haven't Walworth's just been a glorified pound shop for the last few years?

pretty much.

woolies made thier money in cd sales and "having everything under one roof" but the big supermarkets do that, and i dare say they do it better.

it also has no identity. you dont go to woolies to buy something specific. you go there because youve already tried everywhere else.

I think I last nipped into woolworths for some chocolates as a late Christmas gift a couple of years ago. It's never been up to much. However, isn't most of their products aimed at kids? Selling mostly toys and stuff? Never considered it for anything else really.

Woolies' decline began in the 80s, when it was bought by the forerunners of Kingfisher and ceased to be an American company.

I believe the American parent corporation now trades as Foot Locker, from which we may conclude that it failed to maintain its supermarket presence on the other side of the pond as well.
