Erm, annoying one this.

A Friend asked me to help out, the internet is TalkTalk BB, and everythign says its connected, but pages just won come up?

Its pinging fine, and everything is pointing out that its all perfect, just nothing will come up?

The Pages go through the usual tryign to connect and does a few various attempts at different severs searches like, btu they all come up with a blank page.

Anything wrong thats obvious, the usuals dont seem to help.

ethernet router?
modem?

what?

Sorry yes, I did type it down, but then closed the page instead of sending so I was rushed to enter the poor info quickly.

Originally was a Router... A TalkTalks own jobbie.
Then a Sagem USB Modem
Then a Voyager 105

Back to a router.

All show the very same... They connect just fine. but IE or FF simply tell me that the Web Page is unavailable etc, nothing will update, yet the Status is showing that plenty of Data is going both ways.

Pings fine too! - confucious he say stuff it and get a different supplier.

try a different machine, can u ping by domain name? Try entering IP of site into browser.

Different Machine was not an option at the time.

We have decided that the most likely problem could simply be that the supplier of the computer had piled it up with junk and while I have removed what I can, there is no way I can remove it all without an F&R so thats what the next option is to be.

While the PC was only bought in for XMAS, oyud think that there was nothign much on there, but they have tried a fair number of different Internet settings... The TalkTalk is the one and only BroadBand option, however, they also have such nasties in the system as Norton, as well as AVG, and 3 different Firewalls... While I have leveled this down, the issues still remained and so an F&R is what I will do next before I do anything!!!

I think the Router is still going to retain its settings even though its a nasty, its still a router, and I am hoping for that to just connect without any troubles once it gets plugged into the PC through the LAN.

If it still gives us greif then there MUST be an issue with the ISP because the cables have all been swapped over, a number of times with a number of different cables might I add, so I realyl cannot say whats next after that? - Maybe the PC is just incompatile with TalkTalk???

As suggested before have you tried pinging WWW addresses and also IP addresses if so what were the results.

When pinging try a site that is known to repsond to PINGS so I always use the BBC site the IP is 212.58.224.88

If you can ping the Ip but not the WWW then is looking at maybe a DNS issue so nect would be to try browsing to http://212.58.224.88 and see i you get the BBC site up or not

No, Firewall is currently switched off... I had thought about that one too!

Cunfusion is getting bad on it.

Anyway, they have talked to TalkTalk and they have got nowhere on 4 occasions... I am about to go down there now and TalkTalk are going to phone me up and I will be at the PC while TalkTalk talk me through anythning, in case they are missing something, although how I can help out there I dont know?

I seriously think that the wiring in the pnoe lines simply need sorting out... I have offered to have a look, but they dotn want me to touch them... Fair enough, its BTs problem anyway.

Hmmm...

Just got back.

On the phone with TalkTalk for 52 minutes before anyone answered it and in the end the phone just cut out???

Anyway, again, its pinging fine, I pinged BT and TALKTALK and they pinged just fine.

I run the TALKTALK Routers own diagnostics page in the router config thingy and everything cam up with a PASS except GATEWAY and that came up with a FAIL.

So, its talking to TALKTALK just fine, its not getting any further??

Nothign we can do then I recon... Down to TALKTALK am I correct?

Please let me in on anything that I may be wrong / missed out on.

TalkTalk - hmmmmm I once went there, never again.

Cost me £70 to get out of their contract, best money I ever spent.

They are a bunch of beep beeeeep beeeeeep beeep

Agreed.

All the same, I have told them to simply get out of it, dont pay it, do anything but just dont use TalkTalk.

They are happy with my findings... I know Im no pro when it comes to networking, but everything points to me being right... Or at leat to it being an issue with TALKTALK and not the line or the PC.

Tried many Modems, 3 different PCs and I have now had the chance to check the line...

Oh and as a temporary measure...

Freedom2Surf Dialup works just fine by the way.
