Hi all,

I have a job later to day which is quite a trek out of Bristol so am doing some research as don't want to bring the PC back here if I cannot sort it on-site.

The customer has said that his BB has stopped working with error message 680 No Dial Tone when trying to connect. His ISP is TalkTalk and modem a USB Speedtouch330.

Now, is it likely their is a fault with the line?

I have read that if his line has been upgraded then new drivers may be required. If his line his uncapped there are different drivers again, is there an easy way to find out the status of his line, even diagnose a fault with his line?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi mate,

An error 680 will likely be one of three things :

1) Line issue
2) Internal wiring, filtering issue etc
3) His DUN connectoid is set to use a dialup modem, as opposed to the ADSL modem

First thing, and easiest would be to check the connectoid, it's a simple Windows error.

The easiest way to diagnose a line issue/internal wiring problem would be to connect the customer directly into the BT master socket in the property, no extension cables, with no other devices anywhere in the house, single filter, single modem. Swap filters.

If you've done that and still getting no dial tone then it's going to be a case of ringing the ISP. You could go down the route of removing the master socket faceplate ( If it's an nte5 ) but I wouldn't recommend it.

Brilliant advice mate but a little too late. I am sure someone else will benefit from the post when searching for a similar problem though. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

For future reference the problem was with the internal cabling, connected directly into the nte5 with the faceplate removed and the signal was fine. As I have good experience of telephone cabling and systems I pinpointed the problem socket and disconnected it and rewired their second socket as both were problematic. The modem would then stay sync'd and all was dandy.

Glad you sorted it mate. The ol' internal wiring issue :)
