It's a brilliant lens that was mildly crippled by being the first normal zoom that directly went for the Canikon versions rather than undercutting them on price. The VC is brilliant for video, the VC is staggeringly good (though less useful given the short focal range) even for stills, the build is solid and the optics are right up there with the best of them. It has come down in price by about 40% since launch and were I a zoom shooter I would snap it up in a second, the only reason I haven't is due to me having 35, 50 and 85 lenses already, though I may well still pick one up for video purposes.
The VC does take a little bit to kick in after half pressing the shutter which can be a pain but then with so much glass to be moving (82mm filter thread!) and how effective the system is, I didn't have any problems with waiting for it when I was trying it out. I'd try it out to see if you can get on with that sort of shooting though, if you can. Imo if you're in a position to need the VC i.e. shooting at 1/50 or slower, you wouldn't really be shooting massively dramatic action or instantaneous captures so I'd usually be shooting pretty slowly anyway.
