A little while ago, I came to these forums asking what would be an ideal lens for general walkabout usage for my Canon 40D. The general consensus voted for the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD IF lens, for it's awesome image quality, sharpness, and reasonable price. I happily accepted the forum's advice, finding a mint condition copy of this lens on the TP forums for £240. The previous owner tells me it was just weeks old and had hardly any use; good enough for me, saved me paying an extra £50 for a new one :)

I just thought I'd post a fullsize 10 megapixel image up so anyone who's been recommended this and is on the fence about it will hopefully be swayed.

Just realised I probably should have posted a photo that hadn't been processed at all, but bah, too late now, can't be bothered :p Anyway, all I've done is the autofix for colour, contrast and tone, and added some vignetting.

Anyway, enjoy.

EDIT: I was so impressed with it, I also bought the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 XR Di Macro, which is equally as awesome, giving me a bit more length and a bit of macro (albiet only 1:3.9 magnification).

Well you've got a better one than mine. At f2.8 mine is quite soft, particularly on the left hand side of the image. Still for the price I suppose they aren't bad.

Oh, well that photo was at f/2.8, and as you can see, it's not soft at all really

Some Tamron lenses are pretty good. I had the 17-55 for a couple of weeks before it broke but it was a nice little lens, very plasticky though.

Why do you have a 28-75 as well? One is the full frame equivilent of the other so seems a little silly.

Looks like you got a good one from the evidence of the picture!

I think the only thing Sigma/Tamron lenses have been guilty of in the past is sample variation. If you can get a good one, they're almost as good as anything, build and finish not withstanding.

I know a few Pro photographers who use Sigma/Tamron kit.

It's good but not a patch on my Canon 17-55 :p

IQ wise it probably is, however the Canon has IS and won't break when you look at it funny...

(Mine didn't break from misuse, it was an electrical/aperture issue but I had my doubts as to how long the VERY plasticky body would last with proper use.)

Good for you ;)

Now how much was it again? :D

£530 new :)

:p

My 17-55 is coming up to be sent in for cleaning and possibly front element replacement, it's had a hard life!!!

Works perfectly tho.

More seriously tho, the Tamron is a damn good lens and it's why it gets recommended so much! I'd considered getting one before the 17-55.
