I have been having some screen locking/ Freezing problems using Vista.

In XP it was easy to open the Task Manager (Ctrl/Shift/Esc) and close the offending Application without needing to reboot.

In Vista SP1 the Task Manager will not open when a problem occurs either using the above method or (Ctrl/Alt/Del)

Task Manager works OK when there are no problems...

Has anyone else had this problem?

Are you sure the computer isn't completly locking up in the first place? Does this happen during full screen applications only?

I've yet to come accross a situation where the task manager has failed to respond in Vista.

No i'm not sure as once it's frozen the only solution I have found is to restart the comuter.
It only happens with certain programs..

My Vista install tends to freeze up from time to time and I've found the only solution, other than the reset switch and kicking it, is to let it be and eventually it comes back of it's own accord.

Does yours exhibit quite a lot of HDD activity when it locks up?

Probably, it's usually when I'm trying to open a very large file,

May be out of date drivers, or more likely a dodgy application which isn't 100% compatible with Vista, if it only happens with certain programs.

All my drivers/BIO is up todate, but I am running programs that are not 64bit which I am sure are the culprits. I would just prefer not to have to do a complete restart.

I have the same problem, the HDD light will stay on, but everything locks up apart from the mouse, if you leave it 99% of the time it will sort it's self out after a min or two.

opening large files in what?

could be defender real-time scanner & your av, both trying to scan the file..

plus, you only have 2gb, 4gb or 8gb is much better in vista 64

Hey, Thanks for the suggestion.

I turned off BitDefender AV and a file that I was unable to open in Deep Exploration without it freezing is now quite happy to open.

Now I just need to keep the AV turned off.

What are the large files? instead of turning off the AV realtime scanning can't you set some exclusions (like the file type or where they are located?)

Yes excluding that folder from the AV works just as well. Excluding file type is not an option in BitDefender, as it does not list file types like .stl and .obj.

AV back on.

nod32 can exclude folders and filetypes

never used bitdefender

tbh i don't use any av nowadays, but that's another story

basically if you left the pc, it would sort itself out (with the av on), might just take a while
