Taskbar gone Grey/Black

my friend has a laptop problem. his taskbar has gone grey/black. u cannot see anything on there, i cant even see the start button. hes on windows vista. what is the problem and how does he fix it????

try changing the Theme

Do you still get the start menu if you press the Windows key? If it's 'urgent' I'd try creating a new user account. It's not a fix as such but if it works you'll have a more usable computer.

If the problem persists you'll have to dig a little deeper.

UPDATE: i can move the taskbar, but theres still a grey black fuzziness at the bottom of the screen. so its NOT THE TASKBAR.

ive tried changing the theme to aero to anything, it doesnt change........any ideas lads.

yes its there the second it powers up, loading screen, bios, windows boot etc etc.......................its not the taskbar, so i wonder what it is?? how do i fix it guys

Its a hardware problem then. Have you checked the cables are plugged in properly? Power to GFX too, not just the monitor. Try a different monitor if that doesn't help.

sounds like you need a new screen, you could try plugging it in to an external monitor first, just to make sure.

if it's brand new and it's faulty - take it back to where it was bought from.

People have made suggestions. It sounds faulty, and if you aren't going to test it with an external monitor then you can only take it back.

If the screen is broken, it's broken. No amount of help from us is going to fix it.

Yeah, as other's have said, It's impossible to repair a cracked LCD. You will need to replace either the whole laptop, or just the LCD panel.

If it's brand new surely someone must have proof of purchase, and it's broken it needs taking back - simple as.
