Taskbar Icons

On my taskbar i do have a fair few items, but lately since i upgraded from xp to pro (i had all my programs etc. already installed on xp, just hit the upgrade button), sometimes only some of them appear, and the 'hide unused icons' function is not active either despite it still being selected in the options. A couple of repeat offenders for not appearing are the power and sound icons.

Any ideas as to the cause of this?

Start - run - msconfig / Startup.

See whats in there.

look for the taskbar notification icons in there

In my experience, if the volume icon does not appear, it will hold back other icons as well.

In CP/sounds/ make sure the "place volume icon in taskbar" is ticked. If it is, un-tick it and apply, then re-tick it and apply. Your volume icon will re-appear and most of the time, missing icons as well. However, after a re-boot, the problem will return.

Usually, it a sound card issue. If you are just using the windows drivers, disable the sound card in device manager, re-boot and re-enable the sound card. Otherwise, re-installing the specific sound card drivers usually solves this wierd problem.

On some systems, Nero can also be responsible for missing icons in the system tray.
