All,
I'm thinking of getting a few tats done. I've always liked them and really would like to get some.
I have none at the moment.
My parents, are tat free, brought up as Christians they do not mix with this 'type' of people. I do, most of my mates have tatoos and are from working class backgrounds, just like me!

So how do I approach the situation?

I don't want to upset my folks by getting some, however don't want to regret not getting any, as you only live once...

Help :-/

Thanks,

J

Well to get a tat you need to be 18 right? So its not really up to your parents, its up to you. But you do owe it to them to let them know your getting one.

what's more important to you, having a tattoo now, or not disappointing your parents?
if you live at home, if they support you in any way - the traditional side of me says that you need to respect their opinions whilst you are dependent on them.
if you are entirely self dependent - then you have no need to 'justify' your desire to modify your appearance.

I didn't think there was a certain type of person who has tattoos these days?

Perhaps in the past there was those boundaries, these have been removed other than in the old fashioned minds of some. A mindset there are perfectly entitled to of course.

I'm 23. I live on my own in my own house, mortgaged and paid by myself.
I work and support myself.

I'm just trying to work out if it is right to get one or not.

then it is entirely your decision - and i have no idea why you have brought this to a forum, you are a grown MAN who is entirely able to have a grown up and in depth discussion with his parents about the issue!
(if you feel the need to talk to them about it at all!!

(edit: and i also think that every doctor, lawyer, nurse, policeman, vicar with a tattoo would disagree that there is a 'sort of person' who chooses to modify their bodies)
