anyone had experience in escalating problems getting a payment back from them?

Initially we got a letter saying they owe us £400 (nice) we jsut needed to give them our bank details so it could be paid. After several months of letters, forms, and phone calls one of their agents asks if we wanted the other payments made as well (as if we would say na, keep the money)...

these other payments added up to almost £8000 !!

They said they have been trying to pay us since 2006 (but have incorrect or old bank details)! Now for some reason they are unwilling to pay us the money and they keep sending us forms, each time we get a form its either the wrong one, or they simply say we need to fill in another form..

Id like the 8000, but anything back from them would be nice.... (even if its just the 400)

I hate these government people, our last dealings with them (not tax but insolvency) took 15 years to resolve and they turned a 6k debt into 36k plus 8k in legal fees in the end we had to get the head of the service and our local MP involved then we had to sue them to get some of the 26k interest and legal fees back...

Similar they owe me a smaller amount, approx £1000 from last year cant get them to pay it, have to write to them.
But as soon as they found out I had a new benefit in kind this year worth about a massive £80 tax for the whole year they want me to ring them asap so they can adjust my tax code immediately to recover under paid tax.
When I said I would included the details in the same letter formally requesting my under paid tax he said we would prefer a phne call

Took me ages of phoning them every day or so to try and recover about £600. Eventually they told me it was because it was undergoing further auditing chosen at random.

They are awfull to deal with. I decided to pay my tax by bacs instead of By check. They lost almost 20k I received fines late payment charge and interest aswell as threatening letters. Despite having sending photocopies of the transaction scanning and emaling and shouting down the phone at them it took them 2 years to find my money. Then it took a further 6months to get rid of the fines and interest.

I'm not being funny but are you sure it's the Inland Revenue and not a clever scam?

So far they have contacted you about money you weren't expecting and didn't know about. They have sent you lots of forms asking for bank account details. Yet they consistently haven't sent you any money.

Are you just calling the number on the letters they send you or have you tried calling the IR directly?

Heh, true, there are these scams out there, I've seen a few of the phising emails. Not sure if a scam would be serious enough to extend to months of calls and forms?

Though it does seem strange, the last few tax rebates my clients have had turned up in 1-2 days.

not a scam... (i did think of that when we got the initial letter so contacted them via their published number)

I called them when I received a letter, asked how I would get my money back. They ticked a box on the system and I got a check in the post.

They did offer to keep it for me to pay my future tax bills. I imagine they are struggling to keep up with the billions they have miscalculated.

sounds like a scam to me also. the taxman always paid me any arrears via a cheque, they don't need to know your bank details.

+1

Can you visit your local Tax office and ask in person, I've never had a refund to a bank account and I have a feeling I've been told they don't do that.

Have you checked here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/examples.htm ? Sound very suspicious.

Andi.

Last year I realised i had overpaid my tax for the year and was owed around £400.

Phoned the Inland revenue on the number on their website and the lady on the other end looked through my tax history there and then. She discovered I had overpaid for the previous 3 years as well and was owed around £3.5k

I was advised that I would be paid back any money for the current tax year via BACS through my employer and that the remainder would be paid by cheque.

She asked there and then if i wished to reclaim the money and she would arange the appropriate paperwork and I could expect a cheque within 21 days and the BACS payment in mynext paycheque.

Sure enough 19 days later my cheque arrived. No mention of bank details at all and it took one 4 minute phonecall.

I would phone the number on their website and check you are not being scammed. Certainly would not be disclosing my bank details to someone over the phone!

^ sounds more like it.
You are probably not being scammed it just seems it from what you originally said, providing you spoke to the hmrc via their website published number and not from a number on the letter/email or via email link you should be cool.

I have done self assessments for the last 5 years and never had a problem with getting my tax rebate paid.

IIRC - If you're not registered for self assessments then most paybacks are paid by either BACS (Company) or Cheque as self assessments are paid to your own bank account.

Could be wrong, but from asking a few friends/family it seems like I'm not.
