Yoooo,

Basically started my new job about 4 months ago now, and have been on the basic rate of tax for the 3 months. Head office took ages sorting it out etc, So basically ive been taxed double what i should have for the first 3 months. I was wondering, will i ever get that money back?

Cheers,

Jack

Brb phoning head office... Oh wait its 11:30. Yes I could phone head office tomorrow, but maybe someone already has been in the same situation and could answer the question. But thanks for the input anyway.

If you handed in a P45 from your previous job 4 months ago, they should have put you on the tax code that was on that - for example, 603L

If you filled out a P46 (ie. don't have a P45), and ticked box "b" (i've had another job since April), they should have put you on emergency tax (603L Wk1)

Basic rate tax (BR) should only be applied if specifically told to by the HMRC or you have another paying job.

If it's Basic Rate (BR tax code), print out a P46 from the HMRC website and hand it in, that'll take you down to a 603L Wk1 and means you don't pay 20% on all your earnings - you get your tax free allowance every week

And yes - as soon as you get a tax code change (either from your own P46 or from a P6(T) from the tax office), it'll take into consideration what you've been paying previously in the tax year and you'll get it back
