Hey all,

I've had my new job at The Link for nearly 2 months now and i'm loving it. I'm 18 years old.

My Annual Basic wage is £3,536, as it's only part time.

My standard hours are 16 but i do get a 30 min break so i only work 15 and half hours.

I've had 2 pay slips so far and on my first one i was taxed £32.78 PAYE tax. My second pay slip i was taxed £55 PAYE tax.

I've been told that i shouldn't be taxed because i earn less than £4.5k a year.

So firstly, what is this PAYE tax?

Secondly, should i be paying it?

Thanks in advance,

Andy

IIRC you have to claim it back at the end of the financial year, so you are meant to pay it, but then you fill in some forms and get it back later.

PAYE = Pay as you earn.

Your payslip should have a tax code, post it here for more help.

Are there no numbers with your tax code? As isn't it usualyl 475 or something like that, I can't remember.

You should get a P60 soon I believe, as it's the end of the tax year. You'll be able to claim the tax back using that giving it to the inland revenue.

I have the same problem, and have had for the past 9-10 months.

BR = emergency tax code as far as Im aware, and it means you are getting taxed at a basic standard rate when you shouldnt be at all. I've tried no end of times to send of P46 P91 (or whatever it is) forms and even going to the inland revenue office in sheffield, but to no avail. Still BR for me.

Thats an emergency tax code get on to your local IR office and they should be able to get you a proper tax code and get that sent to your employer

Sorry to hijack thread, but when you claim it back, is it given as a lump sum? And also, does this change your tax code to somethng normal? Or is there something else that needs to be done?

That means Basic Rate, 22% (iirc), you need to get a proper tax code as this one usually means you've hit your allowance, when you obviously havent. Speak to your employer or go straight to Revenue & Customs.

I've only done it once, but when I did, everything I was owed was sent via cheque in one sum to be from the IR.

I'm no Tax/Payslip expert, but I think you can get your tax paid back to you through your employer, but I don't have a clue, so don't ask me :p

Ah, BR is emergency code.. well that explains why you've been paying tax anyway. I guess that should be rectified with a new financial year, but could be wrong.

Yes, you get a nice fat cheque and then wave it at pictures of Gordon Brown whilst laughing.

Perhaps that's just me.

That's time wasted where the money isn't in my bank account ! ! !

Any idea how i find my local IR office as i've looked on the site but i must be blind.

Thanks,

Andy

If this is your first job or if it isnt and you havent given the employer your P45, then you will need to fill out a P46 form. This will then give you your tax code (which the IR will send you a copy of) and then aslong as your still working for the company any tax paid should be refunded (fully or part depending on code) on your next pay slip/day

If you quit before the refund you ether wait till the end of the tax year or fill out another form from the dole office and you will eventually end up with a cheque

Also with my work I phoned up their IR office not my local one they should supply details if you need them

P46 form just incase you need it
