to be fair you're getting what you pay for, if you save £150 and get the new 2950(XT?) then that should be as good as if not better then the 8800GTS 640MB, but if you do pay the extra £150 then you get the 8800GTX which owns the balls off the the current 2900XT. im sure no-one knows a definate answer of whether the 2950 beats the 8800GTX yet.

i'd give it a while until some reviews start coming out. if it saves me £150 for card that is less then 10% behind the 8800GTX then i would go for the cheaper.
 
It's a pretty large performance gap from what I understand to the GTX. I highly doubt a die shrink (plus reducing the memory bandwidth :( ) will let it get that much closer to the GTX. Not to mention any revisions that NVidia decide to do (Not that they need to!).

EDIT: By the way, that is one heck of a reduction if it's true! Bit worried they have scuppered the card too much :(
