Beckham not selected for the team. Very harsh imo.

David Beckham has not been included in Stuart Pearce’s Team GB squad for London 2012, it has been confirmed.

Beckham, a key figure in the bidding team that helped secure the games for London in 2005, had been expected to be named as one of the three over-23 players Pearce is able to include for the tournament.

The LA Galaxy midfielder had been expected to be named alongside Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy as the three over-age players, however while the two Welshman have been included, Beckham’s spot has gone to Manchester City full-back Micah Richards.

The 24-year-old was a surprise omission from England’s Euro 2012 squad before refusing to go on stand-by for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder has been a heavy presence alongside bid leader Sebastian Coe in promoting the games in recent months, with numerous key bodies, including the BOA, Locog and the Football Association, said to be keen on his inclusion, something Pearce has seemingly ignored.

Beckham admitted that he was disappointed to be left out, however the insisited that he will still be involved in the games as a supporter.

"Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me," he said.

"Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me. So I would have been honored to have been part of this."

Reports last month suggested Beckham had made Pearce’s provisional squad of around 35 players. The full squad announcement is expected to be made on July 6.

The Olympic football tournament has so far failed to capture the imagination of the public, with over 1 million tickets still available.

Team GB have scheduled a warm-up game against Brazil on July 20 before their opening fixture against Senegal on July 26.

it's an insult to the bloke tbh

ok he wouldn't have got much game time but he was one of the best 3 in his age category imo

One of, if not the, best footballer our country has produced, and hes not chosen to represent our country in the Olympics?

Seems very weird. Something behind the scenes going on here.

Do you really believe that? :o

Lol'd

Beckham isn't good enough anymore. Seems that football has won over politics.

Richards isn't that good, wonder if he will refuse to play if he's not first choice again.

I think it would have been a great way to promote the football competition of the games by including him. Obviously his inclusion would be for publicity reasons, but I can;t seeing us doing any better or worse with or without him in the team.

Plus, Giggs and Beckham in the same international side would have been a great thing to have watched :)

His career kind of speaks for itself.

Do you seriously believe that Beckham was / is 'one of, if not the best English player of all time'...

Staggered.

He was never the best player at Manchester United nor Real Madrid :o let alone one of the best English players of all time :p hahahaha.

Judging his ability is subjective and impossible to agree upon, you'd have to use a yardstick as to what qualifies as one of the best English players of all time. One way to gauge this would be down to the amount of times an individual has represented his country.

Beckham is the most capped outfield player, therefore probably indicating he's one of the best English players of all time.

The arugment that the national team plays more internationals nowadays than before is muted, purely by the fact that other player's England careers within the top ten span the 1940's, 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's.

I don't think he's one of the best players ever or anything like that, but I do think he's a brilliant professional, and one of the best players of his position. He was always so reliable and consistent.

I don't think Beckham is one of the best English players of all time.

I don't think he's anywhere near as good as Moore, Bobby Charlton et cetra, not in terms of ability.

Beckham being the most capped outfield player doesn't mean he automtically one of the best players :) it means he's enjoyed a very long England career.

The argument there are more Internationals of course holds weight, a lot of the 'top capped' England players all played for England over the space of ~10 years the 'new' players are gaining a lot of caps within similar time frames.

I don't think he was a bad player, I think he was a good player but he's been for years a good professional off the pitch.

There are better players that have played for England.

imho, Beckham has been past it for a while now.

I dunno... of the top ten (9 plus Shilton), the only player to have played less than 8 games on average person season for England is Lampard. Bobby Moore averaged the highest England games per year. They're all about the same.

I'm certainly not saying Beckham is the best, but I'd be keen to point out that I reckon he's one of the best. Particularly looking at England midfielders over the past 40 years or so.

Shilton isn't an outfield player.

The players have similar caps, but many are still in contention for International caps, there are more International games due to a lot of International competitions having increased teams entered.

Also; the statement wasn't 'best player of the last 40 years' it was 'of all time'.

He has been an excellend servant and enjoyed a long England career, I'd be very hesitant to call him one of the best ever, given other players that have worn the England shirt over the years. Your appearances shouldn't equal your ability as a footballer :)
