Hi all -

I'm looking to do a Coffee Lake upgrade, possibly looking to hit the order button today or at the end of the week, to arrange delivery around days off work.

I'm going to go for the 8700K and the Asus Maximus X Hero motherboard, which is rated up to 4133MHz RAM when overclocked.

I've just spoken with pre-sales and they have said that one will likely balance another out, just after some opinions or I'm going to go with flipping a coin/saving £10 if I can't make a decision! :D

Should I go for the 4133MHz 18-20-20-44 (£210) or 4000MHz 18-19-19-39 (£200)?

It will be used for gaming and media encoding - decided to upgrade from a X99 platform thatI've had for several years, fancied a change and will be able to recoup a chunk of the costs through selling old parts/cash via birthday presents/pimping my wife*

Any opinions, especially if 8Pack sees this thread, much appreciated!

I think 4K+ is difficult on the Hero unless you run really high IMC voltages or have a great IMC. I would just go with 4K set.... set XMP and memory to 3866 and run...

Out of interest what speeds have you managed to get with the 4,133 kit using the Apex? I’ve not messed with mine for ages but it runs well at rated speed with the 8700k at 5.3 (5.1 24/7), one of the original batch.

I never tried for all out clocks with these. Usually run 12-11-11-28 1t for benching around 4k-4133mhz with high voltage.

I tried once on OC formula asrock x299 with 7740 and got 4500 c18 stable. 4500 kit 18-18-18 did 4800-4850 hci stable.

Wow, some tight timings on those for that speed mate! When you say high voltage - over the 1.4v standard i'm assuming thats a ton more not within any 'safe' for short periods limit/warranty?? Also for some reason my 4,133 Xtremes really hate being in 1T, even with relatively loose timings (18-20-44 as per XMP) if you have any suggestions to make that play nicer.

That 7740 was an absolute boss even if it didnt really have a reason to exist wasn't it.

4000hz! damn good kit for either Intel or Ryzen as give you lots of flex !
