Hi,

Can anyone recommend some free alternatives to TeamViewer?

Work refuses to pay the monthly sub and I can't do my job without it. 5 minutes that you get with teamviewer is pointless for complex issues.

:mad::mad:

Windows built in remote viewer, apart from that you'll struggle to find anything worth using that's free for business use.

Depends what you want it for, if you want to just remote in now and again, Chrome Remote Desktop is pretty good!

mainly it seems to be setting up and correcting issues with email software, outlook, live mail or more recently, thunderbird.

I'll give that a look thanks.

And LogMeIn. I use this for multiple servers/workstations.

Woops you said free... but it's fairly cheap for a year, they must be able to afford it, especially for security.

Ones that work great aren't generally free.

We currently use Netsupport (you can get a free trial from them and buy in batches of 10 lic keys) and the new premium support tool that is built in free with the latest version of AVG Cloudcare.

We use VNC in the office, with Teamviewer as a backup. While we do have an enterprise licence for RealVNC, we sometimes use UltraVNC which is a free alternative and works decently well.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this is for internal PCs. I've been dabbling with Chrome Remote Desktop for outer branches which seems to do the jon for now.

Chrome Remote Desktop works quite well (for a freebie), but we did have issues occasionally when the chrome extension it uses required an update, the machine would be offline until the extension was manually updated/permissions re-granted.

In the end we moved to the paid version of logmein which works quite well and isn't stupidly expensive.

VNC and push out via GPO?

There's a whole ecosystem of free (as in open) software that can do this under the umbrella term VNC (virtual network computing). You might have to sort out your own port forwarding/tunnelling etc. though.

I rate TigerVNC personally.

VNC is fine for internal use, but I wouldn't even consider it over the internet (unless you have some sort of VPN).

I did write 'sort out your own tunnelling' but you're right this is worth stressing, many VNC implementations don't do any encryption.

Tunnelling over SSH is pretty standard which obviously provides strong encryption.

Currently I am investigating a replacement for GotoAssist. Bomgar seems OK but I had issues with rebooting and applying the pw. I think I am going to stick with GTA corporate. I would not touch Teamviewer with someone else's. Too insecure.

I used to use TightVNC which is free for business use - but for any external use you definitely want to tunnel that over SSH or something and 110% make sure its blocked from being accessed remotely on the public internet.

I myself use Teamviewer for stuff thats over the interwebz and RealVNC for my own local.

I am always wondering about better, but to be honest, they do the job 100% perfectly as far as is really necessary.

The only ONE issue that I do have, is that full screen apps more often than not, dont work, but desktop stuff all do.
