Seen a few films now, notably Eyes Wide Shut, where the lead character has asked the cab driver to wait for him, He has offered him a decent amount of money to wait, and in doing so has took out say a $100 bill, ripped it in half and gave the cab driver one half with the other half to follow.

Can you do this? any countries that you cant?

I know I have had in my possession a £5 note with a rip in it and its been patched with sellotape, but not actually fully divided in to two parts.

I'm pretty sure you can here. I remember seeing on the news years a go about a bloke who had a ton of cash in his kitchen, and his dog got to it, ripped a load to shreds. He sellotaped the pieces back together took them to the bank and they gave him new notes.

Yes a note is valid no matter how damaged it is. The bank will take it if its divided into 100 pieces as long as they are reconstructed in some form.

lol what if its a fake note and he never comes back, then the cabbie has been robbed, i'd tell the guy i want the cab fare up front and half of the 100, and he better be back within 5-10 mins.

If they've repaired the majority of the note, then why do you think this would be an issue?

Dont know, hence this thread and the question contained within.

Just seems wrong.

Do the two halves have to match? the tear I mean.

The note - I doubt - has to even be completely there. Just something that obviously resembles near enough one whole.

Going to a bank and demanded the payment of half the sum of the original note with half the note won't work. The note promises to pay a set amount, so it's the whole, or nothing. Doesn't matter if it's in two pieces or a thousand, it's still a valid bank-note.

Having two halves of two different notes is obviously not a good idea though. Remember, they all have serials.

As long as all the pieces are in tack, the bank have to accept it.

My dog got to a £10 note when he was a pup, it was in several bits. They still accepted it.

Each Bank note has two serial numbers and its only those bits you need so on a £10 note you could cut it into 3 and throw the middle it away.

So if two people with one half each walked into a bank, they both get the full face value for having just half a note each? is that what you are saying?

effectively getting $200 between both of them for a $100 bill, by having half each.

If one of the serial numbers is missing you have to send it off to Mutilated Notes, otherwise as long as it's all there the bank will let you pay it in.

I had to send off a £50 with a bit missing and they paid me a cheque for it.

I presume this is in the link above but the general gist in short is this.

No, because the only way you'd get the money for that note is to send it to mutilated notes, and even if they'd pay you for half (I have no idea if they would, the one I sent in was 95% complete but part of one serial was missing), I assume that the serial number would be noted as being that of a note which had been paid out, and no longer valid.

Surely the best thing to do in that scenario is just try to spend it until you find someone that'l take it?
