Hi Guys,

Longer time forum lurker here, just signed up and would appreciate some advice.

I think I need to replace some parts in my PC (which of course will be ordered from Overclockers).

Said PC booted up fine but I noticed the mouse did'nt work, upon investigation turns out none of the USB ports are working.

After rebooting the PC after about two minutes is switched off then started to power up and power down repeatedly in a approximately 5 second cycle

After a second reboot I received a message presumably from the BIOS about the system failing due to overclocking (the PC has never been overclocked) and it listed the CPU frequency as 3.4 GHz (about right for my i5 2500 I think ) and the memory frequency of 1000 Mhz (not sure if this is low or not). It listed one other frequency but I missed it.

Everything then booted up fine so I decided to run the Tombraider benchmarking bit in the game to see what happened - the system crashed again to windows 8 with the message DRIVER_OVERAN_STACK_BUFFER something something. It then returned to the state where the PC just powered off and on at 5 second intervals. I gave up at this point.

I'm thinking motherboard or power supply but in all honesty don't really have much of a clue.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-H67N USB-B3 and the powersupply is the one that comes in the Silverstone SG07 case (600W).

I really would appreciate any opinions on what's wrong, even better if someone could suggest a suitable replacement from the overclockers website.

Specs are:
Processor: i5 2500 (non K version I think)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H67N USB-B3
Powersupply: 600W (unbranded from the SG07 case)
Graphics Card: Geforce 580GTX
Memory: 8 GB Corsair XMS3 (2x4GB)
Storage: Intel 520 120 GB SSD and samsung F1 1GB HD
Operating System: Windows 8

I must admit I did'nt think to restore windows but I would be worried about the power failing during the process - this could be a problem, no? However if you think its worth a try i'll give it a go.

Need to know what, if anything, you have tried to remedy the situation.

When did the problem start and have you made any hard/software changes?
Do you or someone you know have another Psu you can test with?
Have you tried updating or re-installing your USB drivers?
Is Win 8 a recent installation or have you updated to 8.1?
 
Ah, ok, I must admit I have'nt tried a lot to isolate the problem, I'm not entirely sure where to start. I did open the box to see if there was anything obvious. I'm just going to try and reseat the memory now because I just noticed the sticky at the top of the forum.

The problem started suddenly last week, there had been no recent software or hardware changes, prior to that the PC had been fine, with no problems whatsoever. Only thing of note was that the fans had been a bit noisy lately but seem to be spinning ok. The CPU is water cooled - think I forgot to mention that bit.

Unfortunately no spare PSU available but if you think its worth getting one I'll order one tonight - will probably come in handy in future at some point anyway. I did wonder if it was worth picking up a cheap DVM to check the voltages

I didn't try to update the USB drivers because after the initial fault of none of them working once the PC rebooted this problem never appeared again just the power resetting and the windows error. (Plus, I have to admit, it wouldn't have occurred to me)

Windows 8 is relatively a recent upgrade, about 4 months ago and has been working fine since (I quite like it actually). I have'nt upgraded to 8.1 yet

Cheaper option would be a voltage meter, as you can pick these up for about a tenner.
Download HWiNFO64 and install it. Click on Sensor and check your +3, +5 and +12v rails are all within tolerance.

You can also try using one stick of ram at a time and see if it makes any difference.
And download and install Bluescreen viewer, this will give more info if the system shuts down again.
