Technical question: monitor loses video until I switch it off then on again

Hello all

What could this be?

I have a 19" Hanns-G screen, which will soon (in theory) become my second screen, but recently if left alone for say 8 hours i.e. overnight, in the first fifteen minutes of using it it will keep losing its video signal just like if I had switched it off, only it's still on. You need to switch it off then back on again and it 're-finds' the video, only to lose it again after a few seconds...rinse and repeat. This continues for fifteen minutes or so until eventually it just stops happening. There is a black screen but no message saying that the signal has been lost or anything.

Is this definitely the monitor, or could it also be the GPU (please no!)?

Any troubleshooting steps I can try?

Many thanks.

Just unplugged, de-dusted, and re-seated all relevant cables and the graphics card. It still does it. Tomorrow I'll borrow a screen from work and see if it still does it!

Cheers all.

I'm sure there was a thread not so long ago with two people with this exact problem. Turned out it was the monitor both times, and in my experience I'd suspect the same.

IIRC most (maybe all) the Hanns.g monitors come with a 3 year warranty.

Thanks for that. I've borrowed a screen from work and so far the problem has not recurred so it looks as though you're right. The monitor is past its warranty (I'm pretty sure) but then it was only £120 odd x number of years ago.

Looks like I'm replacing it then! Cheers.

PS if anyone can find the thread that Alex refers to, I'd be grateful for a link.

Looks like you've got a good excuse to upgrade to something nicer now. Sounds like you already have something in mind, what are you going for?

I'm wanting to order something tonight for Saturday delivery, but I'm not sure what yet.

It's between the Dell ST2410 and the BenQ G2420HDB. The former has better connectivity. The latter has VESA mount and LED backlighting (and is cheaper!).

I don't want to spend a shed load really as it's not all that important to me, but I like VFM as much as the next guy :p.

BTW this morning I switched the PC on with both screens plugged in and the one I borrowed from work was fine but the Hanns-G kept losing video.

Warranty is out of the question as it's v old...it's going in the junk (or free to collect from Alcester in Warwks!!).

I'd go for the Dell, can be had for around £159 (OcUK is a lot more expensive) I think. LED might give more uniform backlight and possibly brighter, though most people have found the Dell more than good enough on that front.

VESA mounting may be helpful but that depends on your setup completely. The stand on that Dell isn't the best though, so may be worth considering the BenQ for that reason.

Thanks for that Alex.

I've just ordered the Ben Q G2420HDB from OcUK for £143 with courier delivery on Monday. Pretty good price let's just hope it's a pretty good monitor. Not fussed about HDMI so I decided to try out the LED backlit version.

Anyway for £143 how bad can it be.
