technical stuff with new sound card

Bought a new sound card and a gaming headset, the sound card works and everything but I'm having problems with the headset. Previously I was using a USB-powered headset, but the new one is powered by the standard jacks. So, I plugged them into the sound card jacks in the back. What sound I could get them to make was very low quality and changed from coming out of one or both depending on how far the were pushed in. The headphone ports on the front of my computer don't work.

Anyway, I got tired of fiddling with the settings and decided to take the case off. I'm not a pro when it comes to the workings on my computer, but I assume that this unplugged AC97 cable has something to do with the headphone ports. It shares a cable with something plugged into an F audio slot on my motherboard, and due to the length of the wire I can't plug the AC97 into the sound card without taking the F audio out.

Bottom line is that I'm going to be exclusively using headphones for sound, and I need to plug everything into the right place. Should I plug the AC97 into the sound card or is there a better way?

That cable is to get your front panel audio working on your case. It should have ac97 and hd audio, is the hd audio plugged into the motherboard?

I would plug the headset into the back of the soundcard until you get it working.

In the sound cards software you may need to change the output to headset or front speakers. If you have the speakers and headset plugged in it may only play on one of them.

I have no speakers. Headphones are my sole way of audio output... The HD audio must be plugged into the motherboard, if the HD audio is the one connected to the AC97.

They only work when plugged in at the back into the sound card.

I feel that these headphones still aren't working; they play sound, but it's really bad quality and it plays the same sound through both ears. If I plug in my old USB headset, they work fine (they should still do, though I am fiddling with the wires inside my PC...)

I've got the headset plugged into my laptop, and I feel that they may just be crap. It's the Creative Fatal1ty headset. The bass is really good in them, but when the sound starts to hit the hight notes they really screw up.

Playing the same sound through both ears, is not right, whether the sound quality of the headset is good or not. What sound card are you using?

I've been on the sound card set-up thing (the one with the fancy window that pretty much all sound cards have) and tried to fix it. I've looked on Google for solutions and I've tried downloading the latest drivers via auto detect.

Could a driver issue with the DG. Some people do have problems with the Asus ones. Might be worth trying Brainbit's Unified Xonar drivers. Although, if the sound quality of the headset is poor, then it isn't going to help with that.
