need to be a bit more specific i think. in what field of business? or is there a career for technical writers no matter what?

i work for a gearbox manufacturer, in our industrial product marketing program we have press releases go out that are technical in nature and they are written by a marketing agency who specialise in writing technical pieces.

is this the kind of thing you mean?

There's a couple in my department (one recently started).

I'd imagine that pretty much medium/large Project/Development operation would employ them. HOWEVER, my (somewhat limited) view is that much of what they do could arguably be done by Business Analysts. Or at least BAs with a decent level of experience and expertise in creating similar documents.

I wouldn't mind learning a bit more about it to be honest as one thing I do miss from school/uni is the opportunity to write about things in any kind of detail.

A quick check online suggests typical salaries in the £25-35k range.

I do it as part of my job (although it's actually someone elses job :/ )
It's a pain in the arse but that's mainly because I don't get paid any extra to do it.
Its repetitive but the money is decent.
I work for a software company and as well as supporting the software I write the help documentation.
