I am everywhere...
I havent played TK5 before or any of the series so i decide to buy it on the PS store a day ago or so. Im impressed, even thought i aint a big fan of beat'em up (?) since the time of MK on the snes. Anyway, my questions are as follows.

Is there any character that can throw fireballs like they do in SF? Also button combo for such moves would be appreciated.

Can someone explain the ranking system to me. e.g 7th ryu, 3rd dan etc.

Any tip and other advice please.

PS
The manual and in-game help hasnt done it all for me. :p

No you can't do fireballs and magic, it's a melee game.

And tips from me, pressing backwards and forwards to either go towards or back away from your opponent is very important. Combos are in the form of smack your opponent either into the air or onto the floor and try to keep them bouncing off the floor or flying through the air. Can be hard but once combos are mastered their extremely difficult to defend against. Don't forget to block as much as you can if you can't dodge them, and one of the best techniques is to time your moves, learn how fast it takes someone to do a low kick or high kick or combo and if they miss you, you'll then know when to press your moves to counter attack them, it's all about the counter attack.. Best tip to become good is watch Pro fights on youtube and see how they move and fight. Combos can be found in the in game menu.

And copy pasted from a FAQ should answer your question.

Arcade Battle is the other main mode of Tekken 5. In Arcade Battle, you are
to select a character with whom you will raise from the ranks of Beginner, all
the way to the echelon of Tekken Lord.

After you select a character, you will fight your first opponent, who will be
selected for you based on your character's ranking. After beating him/her, as
you watch your fighter celebrate, you are given four options: the fighter on
the top (whom you can choose to fight by pressing Up on the D-pad), the fighter
in the middle (whom you can choose by pressing Right on the D-pad), the fighter
on the bottom (Down on the D-pad), or Exit out of Arcade Battle (Left on the
D-pad). You are given the name of the fighter and their ranking. Think fast,
though! You are not given too much time to make your decision.

For each fight you win, you are awarded money for customization. The amount
you receive depends on how much higher your opponent's ranking is than your
own.

The believed formula, as given to me by Dion Riojas:

Beat someone the same rank as you = 1000G

Beat someone ranked higher than you = 1000G + 100G for each rank higher than
you (100G bonus for one rank higher, 200G for two ranks higher, etc.)

Beat anyone ranked lower than you = 800G

Beat a Warlord or higher (see below) = 1000G bonus (is not dependent on your
ranking)

If you lose a fight to a character, and you opt to continue, you are allowed
to change your character if you so desire. Regardless of which character you
choose and their ranking, your opponent's rank will not be changed.

The ranking list is roughly:

Beginner ---lowest ranking
9th kyu
8th kyu
7th kyu
6th kyu
5th kyu
4th kyu
3rd kyu
2nd kyu
1st kyu
---
1st dan
2nd dan
3rd dan
4th dan
5th dan
---
Shihan
Expert
Master
Virtuoso
Champion
Legend
Sage
Warlord
Conqueror
Deity
Tekken Lord ---highest ranking

The more you fight and win, the higher your ranking will go. However, if you
lose several fights in a row, you will be at risk of being demoted.

Additionally, on occasion, you will receive an opportunity for a roulette. A
Tekken Roulette will take the amount of money you win from the fight, should
you win, and multiply it by either 2, 3, 5, or 10, depending on what the
roulette hits. You will know that a fight has a Tekken Roulette feature when
the top left of the screen flashes red. Be sure to win as many roulette
matches as you can!

Remember Tekken is counter attacks.

Good old Jinpachi, can be a nightmare at times. He's the end boss, the big bad guy, he's allowed magic!

I say there's no magic, but there is i suppose, laser beams from the devils and punches which glow, but there's no magic as in throwing fireballs or similar to eachother.

A quick double tap up or down on the D-pad can be a life saver and get you in a position to counter straight away. :D

Also I would suggest finding a character you like and sticking to them.

true, but then most special moves are the same button combo for eavch char.

pick one and stick with them to start with. get online and found out all their moves. then master them. you need to be able to pull off each move at will.

Thanks guys. I have been using a particular character (dont remember name) and am getting kinda okish with it. Am a 7th Ryu at the moment. Shame it has no online feature. :(

Best tips I would say are:

* Learn to dodge (double-tap up or down), dodging moves is vital and also there are many moves that characters have mid-dodge (usually punishing ones).

* A lot of characters have reversals (a move which if timed right will "catch" your opponents attack and hit them back) - if you are playing against one always remember this and mix and match your moves accordingly (low/high, high/low, delays, etc). If you're playing a character with a reversal - have fun with it :).

* A few characters have sequences of moves which you can add delays in by simply delaying when you press the next button in the sequence. This is invaluable against human opponents to lure them into starting a move, etc.

* A bit advanced this one - if you block towards your opponent on a low hit (only on a low hit) you will push their leg/arm away and get a free hit. I wouldn't recommend trying this until you've mastered the other parts of the game like basic combos, air combos (juggles), etc.

I heard a rumor if enough people buy the game they will add online Mplayer

Hope this is true!

is devil kazuya not in this? (or is it devil jin?)

he was abl to fly and then laser downwards eye beams, or from horizontal standing position use the eyes to laser down the opponent!

i used to love tekken. the original was quality!

dont have PS2 / 3 atm so have not played them in a while.

loved the series though

Tekken 5: DR is the best of the bunch imo, having played all of them. It's got all of the best elements from the series, and got rid of the more useless ones.

Plus its in glorious HD (although it's not as nice as Tekken 6 will no doubt be)

A side step while close to your opponent and instant grapple is a killer blow.

I use Bryan or Hwoarang.

Hwoarang has a killer move, It's a 2 parter.

Forward foward and kick will make him leap forward with a kick, The kick spins the opponent, If you time it right and grapple, You will grapple from behind the opponent, Which is a devistating grapple, Leaves the opponent with nearly no health.

and Bryan is just devistating all over :D

My favourite character, I havent played online yet, But I used to be unbeaten when playing against friends. Can't wait to try taking the show on the road.

Pffftttt. King is much better. Especially for multi part grapples. My forte was more Tekken 3 mainly and 4 a bit less. 5 (DR) has passed me by on the arcade, ps2 and psp. I think the PS3 version is great, but for someone like me who has missed a couple of versions a practice mode would have been the icing on the cake. I too am waiting for the day the Tekken show goes online. Will help seperate the Eddy's from the King's

ps. I think back and LK+RK is a standard counter that can be used for any character btw.
