Hi All,

I never normally post in this topic but just thought I would ask if there are any TV's exist that have a Steam App that will essentially run Steam Big Picture and allow for streaming directly into the television thus eliminating the need for the upcoming Steam Link or a media PC.

Surely with some of the Quad TV's this could be possible?

The TVs may have the power, but I don't think that's the barrier.

Everything I've seen to date suggests that each Smart TV manufacturer want to channel content via its own app base. In other words, they have what looks like proprietary versions of the apps written for their own platform. In order to download any app (such as Steam) then the TV would have to be open platform, and that doesn't look likely given the manufacturers history.

Perhaps the place to look then isn't at the TV manufacturers but at the Steam developers themselves to see if they're willing to write for Sony, Samsung, Panasonic et al.

The Amazon Fire TV has an Android app called "Moonlight Game Streaming" that works with NVidia's game streaming tech.

I'm not sure if it's natively working with Steam's built in game streaming stuff or if this is something the NVidia stuff adds on top but I'm able to stream Big Picture as well.

Thanks for the information guys.

I just feel like it is something that could quite easily be done and it strikes me as surprising that it isn't already in place.

Compared to the likes of Netflix etc it'd be such a niche thing, and it'd end up obsolete when the TV manufacturer gives up on updating it. A dedicated Steam Link is better.

but what about the controller,
the controller range is about the same distance as you can get an hdmi cable so just use an hdmi cable

Steam have just launched the Steam Link - a little add on box for your TV that will stream 1080p 60FPS. Might be worth a look.

Yeah I made reference to this in my OP.

I am not convinced it is niche, with the millions of Steam users around the world a lot of these would take full advantage of it.

With regard to the update of the application if I am honest I thought that would lie with the Valve instead of the TV manufacturer but I take your point that this could be a bit more difficult if this isn't the case.

Couldn't the controller be plugged into a USB slot on the TV?

Most people buying TVs wouldn't even know what 'Steam Link' is, it wouldn't be a particularly major selling point.

Realistically support would be down to both, but apps on smart TVs/players regularly have their support ended after a few years. I have one of the earlier Sony internet TVs and quite a few of the services no longer work because it's an older model now. A dedicated device made by Valve is far more likely to be supported long-term.

It could but would also add complexity to the app, drivers etc various controller brand support.
I wouldn't fancy plugging in my wired 360 controller in and pulling the tv over...
