Telewest Upgrade to 20Mb !!!

Just been reading up about it at digitalspy.. it seems to be trials at the moment. I've just dropped down from 10mb to 4mb as I don't download a lot now.

OMG nice!

We got upgraded from 4mb to 10mb for free about a month or two ago (maybe 3, can't really remember), now I can't wait for 20mb if we are to get it since we're on the middle package i think. First got blueyonder at 512k then upgraded to 1mb for extra tenner, then had free upgrades to 2mb, 4mb and now 10mb.

[Edit] hmm seems we're on the elite £35 a month package but I don't remember upgrading from the middle one. I'll have to ask the parents later about it.

Oh had a look at my modem too, said this: SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-10240-384.

my modem log has said this for the past month:

2006-09-29 04:10:02 3-Critical 0x04E33A74 Started Unicast Maintenance Ranging - No Response received - T3 time-out
2006-09-28 14:03:51 5-Warning 0x040DC13C DHCP RENEW WARNING - Field invalid in response

this is repeated 6 times down the list until here:

2006-09-04 15:57:03 4-Error 0x041D050C SW upgrade Failed after download - Incompatible SW file
2006-09-04 15:57:01 6-Notice 0x041D0318 SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-10240-384

no idea what that means, but seems to work ok. :)

Just checked again this morning and i am still running the 20Mb/768Kb settings. This is so cool and as long as i am only paying the £17.50 I am very happy. Can't belive how quick you drownload things i will need to buy a bigger HDD soon!!

Can't wait till they hit bristol with this!

A little bit of bandwidth shaping on my network should see me getting a dedicated 10mbit providing I can hide all traces of the upgrade from the rest of the people in the house! :D

Lets hope it's faster than the supertram they have talked about for 30 years. The only thing they will give us in Bristol is naff buses (Firstbus monopoly). But we will be one of the first cities outside London to have congestion charging. Oh Joy!

NTL are also trialing 20mb, started today, only a few areas have it and its a trial only, you cant ask to be put on it.. but it looks like if all goes well NTL and telewest may roll this out sometime next year.

I just wish that they could keep a 10mb service going, speeds have been all over the place for the past month... if 10mb is crippling their service i dread to think whats going to happen when 20mb comes.

About 7 according to my calculations.

Yeah, thereabouts. I get a little over 4GB an hour on my 10mbit so that's 15 minutes per 1GB. So on 20mbit it should be 7 or 8 minutes :)

For those who dont know. Cable is a bit faster ie 10meg you get about 12mb on download.....I get 25meg at it peaks at 28meg.....I takes 22 mins for a full one

8 bits to 1 byte so 1 megabit is theoretically 128KB/sec. That means 12mbit is about 1500KB/sec. I've never heard of anyone getting those speeds on 10mbit cable before, regardless of area or whether it's NTL or Telewest?

Everyone I know on 10mbit gets 1200KB/sec at the most which is just under 10mbit, so about right when taking overheads into account.
