Tell me about 350z's....

If you are worried about a few hundred quid on insurance then a Cerbera should be left well alone. They can bring down a small third world country if they go pop and if it were a Speed 6 there is roughly a 98% chance that it will go pop at sometime in its life. Move away from the TVR!

A replacement engine will be expensive but the AJP8 isn't THAT bad is it? The Speed Six obviously is a timebomb regardless, but I had always come to see the AJP8 as a more solid engine..

I can afford to run them, I would just rather a car that doesn't have a reputation of going "pop" and costing the earth to repair/keep on the road.

Be careful with the Elise / VX220 option. As others have said its very easy to get over excited about something and then your stuck with it. Dont get me wrong i like my VX but the impracticality is starting to get to me slightly. Driving it in this weather is pretty pants too and i swear is like driving a giant ice skate not to mention how long the bloody heater takes to warm me up. While my mates are zooming about in there hot hatch's im having to tip toe around to make sure i don't launch it into the nearest lamppost.

Must admit im looking forward to next summer and doing some track days but Ive got a whole winter to get through yet. Hopefully ill get my work van back next week which means it can stay on the driveway for a while. Please also don't assume that just because its Vauxuall that it will be Astra money to run as ive found out :o

If you on the other hand have another car / van and you really want one then there fantastic fun and i would take one over the 11S every single day of the week. Apart from getting more looks it has a better engine which can be tuned fairly easily which in turn makes it a real weapon. You just get more bang to your buck with the vauxuall and IMO its the better looker too. I dont dislike the elise i just wouldent look at one untill we got to the Exige level.

I feel for you in this weather Sam, its these freezing temperatures which is keeping my holding onto my huge merc's, the thought of driving a VX day to day sounds like hell.

If right now i were you i would buy an ultra cheap early 90's s-class with its electric instant heaters and ultra hot armchairs as a daily and keep the VX for what its amazing at, this way it stays special and not simply a hindrance :)

Hi Mate

Are you trying to sell me your S class jez ;)

Nope that is very true, Ive had a van for most of my VX ownership and must say that it makes owning that second car so much better. I actually ENJOY going for a drive,at the moment im having to use the car because our other van (Traffic crap) has dropped its gearbox, needs a service and a cambelt oh and could do with a clutch :p

oh and to make you feel evan more sorry for me the inside of the windscreen also freezes so you have to deice the inside :D haha

Sam

Nah not selling mine (although its going unused since i got the CLS), i meant a £1000 early 90's square one, they are amazing :D

Ah fair enough :) Have i missed a thread with pictures of this said CLS ?

If i end up not getting the van back then i think a second car might be an idea ....

Sam

Should've got the Elise, the heaters work in them. Mine burns my face off :D

I'm sure you know already but there's a mod for the heaters, there's quite a bit of info about it on the VX forum.

Hi Mate

I know please dont rub it in :p

Ive read up on the mod, some people swear by it and some see it as a waste of time. Ive managed to jam my heating on HOT (the knob inside the car does not appear to get it anymore than luke warm) so after 20 minutes I'm nice and toasty aha

Unfortunately my work isn't 20 minutes away so by the time i get to work my fingers, toes and FACE are still ice cold ....

Sam :)

After browsing forums and stuff today, it seems that the 350z is very modifiable... however I do get the feeling that the car gives off a very boy racer image, much like the focus ST.

I'll give it some more thought but it's a strong contender. I still think that the Elise 111s would be a great day to day car... not sure if I could put up with it in the winter, especially with my little driving experience in RWD cars.

Deja Vu, I remember a thread like this a while back! :p

Have you not considered the ST? You could get a good ST-3 for below 14k.

If you have to have a big engine with the higher tax band I would go for an M3 if you can stomach the running costs, the insurance shouldn't be too bad when you're 21 either.

Hey, I'm currently a VX220 owner and bought the car when i was same age as you (21), it has been great and i have loved the experiance although now 3 years on its getting tiresome to own it. I went to shops last month, ended up seeing buying rock band on offer (instrument edition) and had the huge box in the passenger seat, with the roof off (thank GOD it didnt rain) all the way home :/

The absolutely pathetic excuse for a heater is now doing my head in as the winter comes in, for instance it was -2 this morning and my car was froze. Due to no central locking i have to use the key to open the door, but the lock was froze solid and couldnt get in for 30mins... then when i did it took a further 15mintues to defrost the screen. As much as i love the car and how great it is round the track and in the summer, i advise you to only really have it if you can afford to run another car in the winter, its just not fun.

As a previous owner already posted, driving in the rain/wind/winter is no fun either, as you can't put any pressure on the gas for fear of crashing it.

This is why im wanting to sell it and buy something a bit better, funnily enough im interested in the 350z myself due to its bigger size better spec and more importantly a heater that works!! The only problem with them is the increased running cost over the vx220 due to fuel.. vx220 tank cost me £26 to fill up @ 95p a litre and does 200mile. while the 350z tank is a whopping 80 litres and does 25mpg on average..

350Z - the engine and handling is lovely, but the interior is grim, and it needs the Nismo kit and Rays.

It has a 38 litre tank so this is £35-£40 to fill depending on petrol price.

I think im aware how much it costs to fill my own tank with fuel. £26 for a full tank, when filling from 6litres (where the display changes to please refill).

You'd think so, but, clearly not, eh? It costs more than 26 quid to fill the tank.

Your car has a 38 litre tank. Fuel is 95p a litre. I'm sure you can do the rest.

Even if you fill with 6 litres remaining it's still going to be the wrong side of 30 quid.

If you do the maths properly you might find a 350Z is barley any more expensive to fuel.

Allow me to explain. You thinka 350Z is too thirsty as it only does 25mpg whereas you can get 200 miles from a tank.

Your tank is 38 litres. You fill up with 6 left. You fill with 32 litres. This gets you 200 miles. This means you use 7.04 gallons of fuel to cover 200 miles which is 28mpg so just 3mpg more than a 350Z.

There. Thank me, because through use of actual maths I've just demonstrated you can buy a 350Z without fear :D
