Just took the car in to have a couple of things checked. The temp gauge is not working and the steering wheel sounds like its rubbing on plastic.

So I just get a call back from the garage:

They say that I need new temp sensors and it will cost £88!
They also say that the steering wheel rubbing sound is from the "clock spring [and] contacts" and that will cost £71 to get fixed!

Can someone explain to me if these are the sorts of prices I shouild be expecting to pay for a '97 ford fiesta? Sounds bit steep to me [the prices include labour].

 £88 for a temp sensor. I bought one for my Rover. £6 it cost me. It simply screws into one of the coolant channels and records the temperature as the water passes.

Yea, sounds like your being asked to bend over....

Scrapyard or autoparts shop are your friends get yourself a 8 / 10 / 12 / 14mm spanner and you could probably take most of the engine out ;)

taken it to a second place for a quote - no doubt that they will be cheapr and the bloke can tell me exactly whats wrong with it an how to fix myself if need be.

I replaced the temp sender on the Mondeo. Well I say I, I bought the part and gave it to the garage. It was about a tenner from Ford.

I knew how to fit it but my car was in the garage anyway so I asked them to do it.

They overtightened it and crakded the thermostat housing, I suggest you do not do this. Wish I done it myself now!
