Temperature gauge problems ?

Bought the wife an 06 focus cmax 2l petrol auto,

However the temperature gauge seems to be swinging around a bit.

drops off to a 1\4 when on the speed gets up and starts to warm up again when slow driving around 30 mph streets and goes up to half way when stationary .

The fan comes on when it gets to the middle and comes on when you use the aircon .

Thanks all been quoted £130 for a new thermostat fitted

i am tempted to have a go myself anyone fitted on of these before ?

Assuming you are confident in filling and bleeding the cooling system afterwards, the actual changing of a thermostat is typically a very simple job on any car I've done it on.

they are not too difficult and you should easily be capable of doing it yourself. Thermostat itself should be less than £10 plus the cost of new coolant and maybe an hour or two of your time if you haven't done one before.

there should be some guides around for your specific car. The job basically involves, draining coolant - gain access to housing - remove thermostat retaining clip - replace thermostat - put it all back together - bleed coolant system

Thermostat change on my MX5 took 3 hours
But that was due to the thermostat being in an almost inaccessible area on the engine and required the removal of the throttle body to access. With good access it would have been a 10 minute job.

Hardest part is draining the coolant and refilling afterwards, but that's hardly an arduous task.

I'm having thermostat issues with the Mondeo at the moment (see the 'what have you done to your car today' thread for a blow-by-blow).

Sounds like a very similar problem to yours, originally diagnosed by a dodgy temp gauge on the dash.

All I will say if you do it yourself is buy a genuine Ford part and don't rely on places like Euro Car Parts.
