Chaps,
A while ago i bought a bundle consisting of a Phenom 955 BE 3.2 @3.6 and it came with a Noctua NH-U12P cooler.

I have only just got around to fitting the cooler. I have downloaded AMD Overdrive and taken a look at my CPU temps. It shows it running at approx 44 degrees at idle. My understanding is that if fitted correctly and given that air flow through the case is good then i should be seeing CPU temps a good 10 degrees lower.

Is AMD Overdrive an accurate measure of the CPU temp? If so am i right in thinking my temps are high? If they are high then would i also be right in thinking that i have likely fitted the HS badly?

FYI the system is stable and has been for the few days since i have fitted it so am i just being paranoid.

I have not taken any temps under load.

Cheers
Meurig

im not sure how accurate the program is, but i would suggest, when it is confirmed the program isnt underestimating the temp (unlikely but possible) to put the processor under maximum load.

with my 955Be i found this happened when i had Prime 95 running on 3 of the cores and furmark running as well (using the 4th core). both these programs can be downloaded for free, and can be found easily on google

if your temperature goes above 62C then you should stop it immidiatly, because thats the maximum safe temperature for that chip

I have just fired up iRacing and monitored temps for the 20 minutes i was racing. The temps went up to 62.7 pretty quicky but never exceeded that.. i think i need to take it out and re seat the cpu cooler.

Ive just sold one of those coolers and even with a high clock idle temps were a lot lower even with the paste that came with it. Try re seating it again. As you say temps should be 10 degrees lower

Are the fans both running ok? might be worth checking this and all fan speed options in the bios before taking it off, re-applying paste and re-seating it. If you have fan control settings in the bios set them to performance if not already and see if that lowers temps any.

Ok, i took the cooler off, cleaned off and then reapplied thermal paste (only the paste that came with the cooler) and then re seated the cooler.

I am now seeing idle temps around 34 and after an hour of battlefield BC 2 it never went above 52. This is with a Phenom 3.2 @ 3.6 with 1.4v to enable stability on my Gigabyte GA-MA790xt-UD4P board.

This seems a lot more reasonable to me.

Cheers
Meurig.
