Temperatures on a mildly overclocked 3930k

Hi,

I've overclocked my 3930k to 4ghz.

I set the voltage manually and under full load it hits 1.230v.

I have disabled all power saving features, so it's running at 4ghz and full voltage all the time, as such it idles at around 40 degrees C, or 38 with a lot of fan noise...

Under 100% load it hits around 60 degrees C, which I'm fine with.

My question is regarding the idle temp though. is 40 degrees acceptable for idling? Any danger of parts wearing out quicker if it's idling 24/7 at this temp?

Also I noticed that lovering Vcore below 1.3 v really had no impact whatsoever on the temperature, is this normal?

What programs you using to read your temps? Try RealTemp see if it givs you more realistic temps, lowering voltage on my cpu from 1.3 to 1.23 makes lot of heat difference. But using my software provided with the mobo i get silly temp readings such as 9 degrees idle.
 
Thanks I'll try that. I was using HWMonitor and the corsair link software, both reported the same temps. Asus suite reported 12 degrees cooler but that's typical
 
Why would you want to run your CPU at 4ghz when it's resting???

I deal with real time audio, if my system decides it wants to either ramp up or down the frequency it can result in a lot of popping and crackling in the audio playback. The most stable way to run a digital audio workstation is to keep the frequency where you want it all the time.

You don't actually say what cooler your using for these temps. So its hard to judge where your at.

The cooler is a H100i, ideally running with the lowest fan speed I can get away with. At around 800rpm the pump is louder than the fans.

When funds become available I'd like to build a custom water loop with the goal of achieving better cooling with less noise.
 
Tasks when the system is idle? OK lol

When performing "tasks" the system doesn't just decide "time for max power now, we'll keep it there until it's done", it tends spend a lot of time jumping around trying to use the lowest amount of power it can get away with, in my experience it's pretty inconsistant until you are loading your cpu up quite heavily. It seems from 0-50%, anything could happen...
 
I have another question...

I found that I was getting a fair amount of Vdroop at these low voltages. To eliminate it I have to use a high LLC.

I read in your guide not to do this for 24/7 to save heat on components, but being that I'm doing such a mild overclock, with such low voltage and core temps very rarely going about 44-45, is this going to be an issue for me?
 
The GT is the only fan I will use in my watercooling builds. It shifts so much air with such little noise and being a server product is very relaible too. At last count I have 30 of these fans in different speeds. A truly great fan.

I'm curious to see what these things can do on a proper radiator now with a few more volts and Mhz in the equation! The pump on the H100i is the loudest part of my system now which is quite irritating but I suppose there's not much I can do about that short of getting an appropriate case and water loop.

As soon as funds allow I can't wait to try that
