Temporary motorway speed limits

This is more aimed at those unfortunate enough to regularly go for a jaunt up or down our glorious motorway network (especially in the busy areas), but who actually obeys these temporary motorway speed limits?

It seems that traffic can literally be flowing at a cool 70 MPH, a 50 limit will flash up, and then we'll all slow down to around 70 MPH.

I've started to only really take them as a warning that something up ahead might be amiss.

Thoughts/opinions?

Depends if they're on a VMS (variable message sign) with the red band around them then yes I will obey them. Hoever if the gantries and vms are just flashing the number then I will generally slow down a bit but those speeds are only advisory.

What's wrong with it?

Accordingly no one slows down...

You can't slow down to 70 from 70

But anyway, my take on it is, if you are talking about the advisory central reservation speed marker signs, then all that tells me is to be more observant further ahead than normal and to expect the possibility of a sea of red lights. If I don't see any change in the traffic I don't slow down.
If on the other hand you are talking about the overhead gantry type with red banding then, I'm straight down to whatever that sign says as that one is legally binding (and more often than not a camera is on the gantry too.

Thats his point, duh.

Then why not write "no one slowed down" instead of saying people slowed down from 70 mph to 70 mph" as that sounds somewhat retarded.

Not a fan.

I got caught in one last June, on a lovely Sunday afternoon.
Court date's in 3 weeks so we'll see what happens.

I was doing 85 in a 50 though, so I'm expecting two weeks and many hundred euros.
At least you can choose when you want your ban though, so I'll be taking mine whilst I'm on holiday :p

This thread is about speed limit warnings, the ones everyone ignores:p not cameras.

I'm sure that the highways agency just do it for something to do. I don't pay attention to ones which aren't on managed motorways (i.e. where there are speed cameras and I'm likely to get a ticket.)

I started off obeying them, but I got fed up after the umpteenth time that there was nothing ahead giving me any reason to drive slowly, or an "END" sign to tell me i'd passed the danger.

So now I just ignore them, but keep an eye out for congestion.
