Sometime, either 2011 or 2012, I'll be buying an SSD.. until then, my old hdd is too small to live with.

I'm looking for something at least 500GB - but !! - it's got to be quiet, and as little vibration as possible. It will be used for booting Windows, apps, games, and the small amount of music and vids I have.

The SPCR recommend drives are mainly 5400rpm drives, but I'm guessing people here will not agree :p I'm concerned that another 7200rpm drive like the Samsung I have now will be too loud. The Samsung is +easily+ the loudest thing in my case, and vibrates so much the case resonates.

Whatever I get will likely be put in a NoVibes III enclosure, and placed near the intake fan in my case to avoid overheating it.

I could be using this drive for a while, so I don't want to be slow, but it sure doesn't need to be a Raptor or a 10k drive :D

What are the suggestions from the noise conscious builders here?

Regarding noise of Samsung’s have you used their boot disk tool (EStools I think) to change acoustic noise of drive? And put it in quiet mode. But probably won't make any difference to vibration.

If the drive is resonating the case then it's the mountings that are to blame, not the drive. If the drive is mounted too firmly in the case the overall noise level can be several orders of magnitude more than it needs to be.

You don't need to go as far as bungee mounting it (although it will give the lowest noise level), decent grommeted screws can be nearly as effective.
