Hi all new build with Sandy-E 3930k, still awaiting h100 in the post but thought i would switch on and install O/S as didn't think would get to hot but within about 2mins on sitting on the BIOS i noticed the temp was sitting on 80+ and i thought, that can't be right can it? and literally a monmet later the comp auto shutdown. Opened the case door and the CPU was roasting. I know Sandy's get hot but sitting idol within a couple of minutes getting hot enough to auto shut down, is that normal?
Awaiting H100 until i start up again as i dont want to damage anything. Any thoughts as to if this is normal or something else. Motherboard is ASUS x79 pro, PSU is OCZ 850W Gold + RAM is Vengence 1600 C9 (which gets auto underclocked by motherboard)

Thanks for the help

Have you not got a stock cooler you could even use till you get your new cooler in? No cooler at all is a definite no no.

thats all i wanted to know, its here today so should be fine, my first build i done myself so wasn't sure thought i would be ok for idol work. Now i know for future, thx

For low level work, you can get away with using a heatsink passively, (no fans attached). But a cpu with no cooler attached at all isnt reccomended. We all make mistakes on our first builds, so hopefully your cpu should be fine. Thermal protection will have shut it down to prevent damage.:)

no its fine, i let cool down did a reboot to bios to make sure was still working and turned off again. I knew as its 130w processor would run warm but didnt think it would hit dangerous levels. My bad =/

Wait so you powered up your system a 2nd time without cooler :O

CPU should still be ok, Intel has built in thermal shutdown ever since the very first Pentium 4. It's very hard to kill a CPU nowadays.

Lesson Learned, Wait to stick the H100 on it as socket LGA 2011 CPU's don't come with a heatsinks as stock. Thankfully you haven't damaged it, this is a golden rule :) always use heatsink or the CPU will go nuke its self...... very quickly indeed.

Yes after an hour cool down and only to check processor still worked, litterly 10secs, then hard shutdown.

Yeah 3930k, 3960x & 3970x dont come with stock coolers which is kinda cheap on intels part but makes sense as they are entusiast chips so no ones going to want there cheap HSF.

Knew i should have waited for cooler first, guess i got a little too excited though, and turned on early ;)

Obviously by know you know about the requiring a HS/fan at all times, but just to add, sitting idle in the BIOS isn't the same as sitting idle in Windows, none of the power saving features work in the BIOS so.

Intel actually sell a closed loop water cooler which is recommended for those CPU's, an OEM HS/fan wasn't really an option as they are essentially a 2600k and a half, and the 2600k can easily saturate the stock HS/fan under stress.

I hate to think how you would have got on with a pair of GTX 480s:D

There are plenty of people on here with 3930ks who will help if you ask first before you do anything.

As to your RAM - select the XMP option in your bios to get it running at its correct speed.

Surprised no one has recommended him making his own custom water cooling by filling his case.

Some people scare me. Who in their right mind spends £4xx on a cpu and then runs it without a cooler. Then asks if it's normal to get very hot and shuts down.
