Temps ok for 2500k?

Hi Guys,

I've not really overclocked a machine in years, since my old Athlon XP...

I've just installed a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 with Arctic Silver 5 paste onto my 2500k. Overclocked at 4.5ghz it idles around 30c (going as low as 25/27) and then peaks around 65/67c when running Prime95.

Is this the kind of temp I should expect?

That's pretty good.

Mine (at 4.5) idles around the low 30's and (with a noctua d14) only hits 59C under prime.

If you start hitting 70's while gaming its time to turn it down but I very much doubt you will. That seems very good to me..

What vcore have you set it at?

Oh cool, I'll give it a go.

I noticed a lot of people have their cooler sat facing the rear like this...

Back | < CPU FAN | Front
| GPU |

But I have mine like this,

| ^CPU FAN |
| GPU |

Sorry for the bad diagrams! But the arrows (< ^) are the direction the fans are pointing.

Do you think mine will cause any issues? I also have two case fans, one blowing in from the rear onto the heatsink and one at the top sucking out (effectively causing a suck and pull on the heatsink) thanks for the help and quick reply btw :)

I tend to set mine up front to back instead of bottom to top (your method).

The front to back just makes more sense to me, as the air coming into the heatsink from the front fan has only gone over the hard drives (if anything) so will be cooler air.

As with the bottom to top method it may take air from the GPU (as hot air rises) which will be hotter than outside air.

The bottom to top method is quite common and a lot of people use it, it just doesn't make much sense to me.

I guess you could reverse the fan direction and have cool air being pulled in from the top, though that would supply your GPU with hot air..

Haha exactly what I thought after I had put it in...was kind of like "erm...well that was stupid".

I'll see how it goes, and maybe move it tonight. Thanks for the advise! :) at least I know the temps are ok like that, will get something graphically intesive going and see if the GPU heats up the heatsink too much.

Things like that happen though it may not be a huge issue..

It would be good to see if the you temps did affect the CPU. Lets us know mate.. :)

Below 70 while gaming is what you want. I would say clock it so it sits at 69 max after 5 hours of playing bf3 or something :)

Sounds spot on. I have same chip/cooler as you and I also have it mounted the same as you as I have RAM with large heatsinks so I can't sit it to push air out of the rear, only the top. I've been running mine at 4.5 with extremely similar temps and same cooler mounting for 5 months now, not a problem so I would echo the guys above, if it's sitting under 70, you're perfectly good.

Ah nice to see someone else in my exact situation! :)

Ok I will try and clock more and more as I go, but I don't think there will be a point in the near future where I have the spare time to play anything for 5 hours straight!! haha :)

Well to give you a idea i have a 2500k had it 2 years running at 4.6ghz and i am using a Antec 620 liquid cooler. Mine using prime95 under full load at 1.4v it sits around 65c. when gaming it sits around 50c

How? I have the same CPU and cooler, also at 4.6GHz, but using 1.377v, with a pair of Venom Vipers, and my temps are 10°C higher under prime

Well in my bios mines set at 1.36v but under full load it hits 1.4v volts on prime 95 and after 15 mins it does not reach much more than 65c on core temp

Is that running blend? And do you have the original Kuhler 620 or the new 620 Series 4? Cos i'm running prime right now and my temps are on 75 after just 2 minutes. (which is why I dont run stress tests and why I am installing a custom loop soon)

I'm running my 2500k under an Kuhler 620 also. 28-32 idle and 65-68 under prime95 at 4.6GHz. I'm running about 1.28v though, which helps with the temps!

Well my 620 might be under-performing then.

Not too fussed to be honest, i'm stripping out and re-building my system from the ground up soon. New PSU and motherboard in the post, custom W/C parts in my cupboard etc :D

Yea it's the antec 620 I got it 2 years ago .. But yea I run blend test and most it hits is 65c if that. Obv warmer days like the last couple of days little bit more but on average thats what it runs at under load

Can I be nosey and ask what fans you have on it, at what speed, and whether you have it pulling air into your case, or pushing air out? A tad worried that mine might be defective.

You're running 0.1v more than me though, which will make for some extra heat!

I'm running two of these fans in push/pull:

1 x Enermax T.B.Silence Manual UCTB12A 120mm Fan £10.98
