Temps still high after installing custom loop

Hi All .

I've just installed my 1st custom loop to cool my CPU. The CPU is i7700 overclocked to 4.8. I've been stress testing in 5 minute bursts and max temp is as high as 85 Celsius which is a big concern. I'm looking for recommendations on where to start with my troubleshooting

Is the pump definitely working/running?

Yep pump is running , there is a flow meter in the loop so it’s easy to tell if flow has stopped . Loop itself appears to be running without issue and it’s plenty full of coolant. I’m going to start with re fixing the cooling block just in case I did a bad job at that stage

Yea, check the block is actually making proper contact and that the thermal paste has spread nice and evenly. Also, are you sure you have the jet plate fitted correctly?

Make sure you have got any trapped air out.

Put pump to max rpm tilt case from side to side

Is the chip delidded? I'm pretty sure that a custom loop will not make too much difference unless you whip the top off and stick LM under there.

Just for reference, my loop keeps my 7700 at less than 50 at load. I’d re,mount the CPU water block.

Nonsense. A custom loop should be more than capable of keeping a 7700 @4.8 cool.

Took me a good 2 days to get all the air out of my loop so I would start there. Run the pump at full speed & tip the case, you'll hear any air in the system come out.

It would have to be fairly large air pockets to cause a big impact in cooling. Most large bubbles should clear from leak testing after a few hours or less else your pump is probably not producing enough head pressure to force them out. Unless your radiator is too small or fans running too slow then the likely culprit is poor CPU block contact (or you're running very high volts into the CPU).

I presume you have the pump in's and out's the right way round and also on the CPU block? We've all done it i'm sure at some point.

The CPU temp can certainly ramp up high if it's not delidded. You can fix the contact between IHS and waterblock easily enough by reseating the waterblock, but how do you improve the contact between die and IHS without delidding? There's the weak point; you're at the mercy of Intel's toothpaste TIM. I've seen it on my old 4770k: turn on small FFTs, launch stress test in Prime 95 and watch the temps soar to 85 within a minute on custom water, meanwhile water temps are still mid 20s. My current 1950x is 10-20 degrees cooler with 16 cores. 4 GHz as opposed to 4.3 on the Intel, mind you.
