Hi im running a Q6600 @ 3.1Ghz on a J&W P45D2 Ultra board with a OCZ Vendetta cooler with a core voltage of 1.264v. At idle it is around 53 celsius and after 5 minutes on prime95 it going to around 70 celsius.

This is taken from coretemp. Im thinking i may not have applied thermal paste correctly so i am going to reapply it when i get a new cooler. What do you think of the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme Rev.C?

Could my high temps be down to the paste?

Thank you

How much paste did you apply? A rice grain sized amount is adequate, the Thermalright ultra is one of the best cpu coolers on the market, been using one for quite some time now, started on a q6600, then a q9550 still use it on my i7 setup. Too much paste can lead to high temperatures.

Think i may have applied too much paste. It was a little thicker than normal. Im thinking of going with the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme Rev.C and a two fan set up. Really want to get it up to 3.6Ghz stable and cool

If the chip will do 3.6ghz the TRUE will cope with it very well, your voltage so far looks nice and low which is always a good sign.

The ultra is okay - do you have adequate airflow in the case? Even the best heatsink/fans still need cool air in the case to work with? Also how high is ambient temp? case temp?

Yeah i got it up to 3.4Ghz on around 1.3v and was stable for a few days then i lost my bios settings. Im not sure on the case temps etc but im looking at getting a new one soon

Kept the overclock at 3.1Ghz all last night and converted a few avi files to dvd and never crashed once. Temps tho stayed pretty high. What TIM is good to go for?

Also what fans do people recommend? My motherboard only has one 4 pin fan port but loads of 3 pin fan ports so think i will either connect them to the 3 pin ports or on to my fan controller
