Hi,

Basically I have a spare 18'' TFT doing nothing and would be nice to be able to watch Tv / films in the bedroom. There is no aerial in there though.

Was thinking the 360 might make a nice cheap media PC. I got an HTPC box so it would just use the Media extender part to share files right like mp3's and avi's etc ? So would only need to get the 360 arcade edition.

Only other expense is I would need to buy the wireless dongle.

Oh and possible to play on both 360's or is it a hassle to transfer accounts and save points ?

Thanks

You could transfer the HDD to each 360 when playing on them?

Otherwise it's just a case of either recovering your gamertag on each 360 (takes about 15 minutes at a time) or buying a 64mb memory card to transfer the tag. That would be easier.

If you want a media pc get a ps3 surely- blu ray, has the wifi built in and you can run linux on it.

Do NOT recover your gamer tag.
This is NOT designed for portability of accounts, it's extremely irresponsible to suggest this.
Note the following important information about account recovery:
Do not use account recovery to take your Xbox Live enabled profile with you wherever you go. If you want to take your Xbox Live enabled profile with you to a friend’s house, use a memory unit.
• When you perform account recovery, any other copies of your Xbox Live enabled profile that are on any memory units or hard drives will be invalidated to help protect your security.
• If you use your profile on both the original Xbox console and the Xbox 360 console, copies of your profile on the original Xbox console are not invalidated unless you perform account recovery on an original Xbox console.
• Account recovery erases any pass codes that are stored in the Xbox Live enabled profile. Therefore, you may have to create new pass codes to help protect the Xbox Live enabled profile.

I've got two 360's and really the only way to transfer your gamer points/account is to just shuttle the Hard drive between both units, it only takes a few seconds and works perfectly.

could have fooled me. Used it for three years no problems :D
So instead of just popping out your HD or even copying to a memory card you're happy spending all that time and hassle recovering your gamertag - a process that MS themselves don't recommend?

Seems utterly pointless to me.

In the OP's specific circumstance I would've thought the quickest option would be the best, popping the HD in takes literally seconds.

There's times I'm at a mates and don't have my HDD in my purse.

If you read my first post I suggested just taking the HDD with him.

Yep. Someone was selling one for £5 on here. Gutted i missed out to Dannyjo.

I usually just recover gamertag. Do you simply make a copy of the profile then transfer it to a mates once? Then you can use it whenever you want without needing the card again?

Sorry to bump an old thread but I was wondering about this myself. My mate lives across the road and has a 360 too, want to use my profile on his and vice versa but not sure how best to go about it. We tried that Recover Gamertag thing and it went completely **** up and my mate couldn't log on to live for a day because of it, so not too fond of that! Wondering how the memory card transfer works, cheers.

Memory card is easy, you just move the profile onto the card in the memory managment section.

Recovering a tag is quite annoying as it takes ages to recover mine.

They throttle the bandwidth for "recovering gamertags" So even if you are downloading from Live at like 1mb a sec, your profile will download at a very measly speed (I checked once as I thought it was a prob at my end and it was something silly like 30kb a sec).

I know £5 was a give away and I needed one for the Mrs. You can rest easy though because some **** beat me to it as well :(

It looked like I had got it because I made an offer, I offered because I have the person that got it on ignore so couldn't see his offer :D

I still need one.
