Tenants, What odd questions have you been asked when trying to rent a property

Lol i'd have loved to have see someone try and hold that up in court.

Haha, can you imagine?

Judge: "And why exactly did you evict the tenant"
Landlord: "He stir-fried some rice your honour!"

I can only assume it was one of those "rules" which everyone nods and smiles and agrees to, knowing full well they have no intention of sticking to it :D

another question my friend recently brought up which i thought was ridiculous and discriminatory being chinese myself.. bear in mind he is foreign and moved from the States due to work requirements and is of indian descent.

Is your wife westernized? if not the landlord is not prepared to rent this property to you.

Since when has someone's culture got anythign to do with it

What was the exact wording of this? Was it a clause in the contract or just something asked informally? If it's the former it's unenforceable, if it's the latter just say yes.

It is a ridiculous question though.

I believe direct question from the landlord to be passed across by the agent

7 of us rented a large student house for 9 months, and the landlord asked each of us what courses we were studying and whether it was a HND or a degree. We had to fill it on the form as well. Not sure why that was relevant though.

A bit more bizarre - the same landlord asked us how many computers we had between us. So we said 7 or 8 (think 1 guy had 2 PCs IIRC). Little did the landlord know that we were going to run United Devices (cancer research) program on our computers.

We didn't get our deposits back :p

the second one is understandable.. i guess it depends how anal a landlord can be by calculating a rough estimate of electricity usage per month.

The one about degrees can be taken in different ways.. personally used to judge a person by what subject they are doing to determine whether they are sensible or not.. even if using that method is not accurate

Twelve months of payslips is a bit excessive, one payslip and a reference from my employer I've been asked for but 12 seems needless.

The gardening question depends if the garden is already tidy when you move in. My sister got stung for part of her deposit when she moved out as the EA said the garden was untidy when in fact it was much tidier than when she moved in.

yes especially when he and his wife both work for billion dollar corporations and been with the firm/s more than 10 years. The agents/landlord didn't seem to care who/how long they worked for and wanted a years worth of payslips

I want my block of flats to have a no fish rule now
some people like to boil what smells like onions too, I wonder what they are actually making or if they are just annoying people.

I don't live in a block of flats but my neighbours are direct and we all have balconies, all I could smell all last night was burning lamb and oil.

every 5 mins beep beep beep, I think someone left meat cooking on really low temp and it was slowly burning

I was asked to provide 3 months when I got my first flat however I didn't have a credit rating or any references as I was leaving home.

Went to view a room in a house share, landlady wanted to know if I also wanted use of the kitchen and bathroom as part of the rental agreement.

Thought that was a bit wierd... who lives in a house and doesn't eat or use a bathroom?

Only rented as a student, don't really recall being asked much of anything just signed a few papers, paid a deposit and got the keys.

The garden part seems reasonable, the first place I bought was a maisonette so the garden was split into 4 with just a small chain fence between them all. One of the properties was rented and they did no gardening at all. Their garden was completely covered with 2 metre high brambles and weeds. The rest of us had to cut back their encroaching garden from our own.
