I'm heading off to Tenerife at the end of the month for a week. A relative owns an apartment in Playa de las Americas which I'll be using (Palm Beach apartments if anyone knows them?).

It wasn't my first choice of destination but a free apartment and a desperate need to get away to somewhere sunny for a week made it irresistible.

I have been to Gran Canaria before and I imagine Tenerife is going to be much of the same thing, i.e. loads of sunburnt fat English men drinking Stella and Carling in the usual tourist traps.

Apart from the usual drinking and shagging that goes on, what else is there to do? Is it possible to hire motorbikes/quads and go up the mountain? What about speedboats, jetskis etc? What sort of price would you expect for these?

What about the bars and whatnot? Where are the good spots for a bit of craic? I hate clubbing so that's out unless I get airlocked.

Basically, I'm a Tenerife virgin and would like to get some idea of what I can I can get up to before I go.

Thanks.

Getting drunk?

There's lots of "English" bars. I've only ever had a disjointed week there, so can't vouch for any non-lagerlout locations...

I was hoping to stay away from the English and Irish themed bars because the clientelle are usually people you know, and that's not what I want when on holiday. I want to get away from people!

However, I'd never turn down a good night's craic so any forthcoming recommendations will be welcomed :D

Serious answer? Good luck.

I spent a year in Los Gigantes and went to PDLA on several occasions. Great if your 15 and from Blackpool intent on fumbling some pasty chav but I'd rather spend a week in hell than go back again.

To be constructive I'd take a trip west and see some of the nicer area's of the island.

Edit - Scuzi if you want any advice on where to visit (outside PDLA) then feel free to email me, address in trust obviously.

Las Americas is a bit of a dive really so i would try and keep away as much as possible
Thanks for the link. I'll be staying right in the middle of it so staying away is going to be quite difficult:o

I obviously don't know you personally so it's difficult to assume what you like and/or find acceptable.

I'm no prude and at 30 years old I've "been there, done that" in places like Ibiza/Benalmadena/Majorca (all the "lively" places) over a decade ago but I simply thought PDLA was some really dirty, sleazy, cheap, tacky hole of a place when I was last there (September 11th 2001 incidentally).

i discovered that if you get drunk enough you dont notice how bad it really is :p

the pub & club strip "veronicas" as they call it will be full of drunk randy teens dancing around like nutters and across the road prostitutes pestering people all the time

i think if you avoid that area and try some quieter bars it wont be so bad but i cant remember anywhere that i would want to return to...ever, im sure most of the bars away from the strip were more entertainment/karaoke type and for more mature people wanting a laugh and a chat

This is shaping up to be a bit of a melon. Ahh well, it was cheap.

As long as the women are easy :D

Thanks for your input guys.

At least the taxis are (well were) very cheap, and nice new Mercs btw, so if you hate it you should find it easy to explore further afield.

At palm you're in a decent location, right near veronicas strip.
Woman are very easy, and if you're having no luck theres brothels :p
Definately try 'The Cali bar/ Calidonian Bar', its down some steps on veronicas strips near Yordi's sportsbar.
Cant think what else is around really, definately be somewhere to have a laugh with the lads though, we had a hilarious time there. As said though las americas is a dive, but its a heavy drinking place. Make sure you buy yourself an umbrella had off a lucky lucky woman, they're COOL.

Cali bar do 'buckets' of booze, its basically a plantpot and u tell em when to stop pouring whichever spirits in, its guaranteed to be a good night after a bucket!

we stayed in parque santiago 4, between los americas and christanos and YOU really have to try Bianco's restaurant near to 'Harrys Bar' in the centre (Near the fountain that plays along to music at night. Fabulous service and food and good prices.

Im a H Chef, so know my food and service and that was spot on, also Tenerife was the cleanest place I have been to. We only went in May for a week, just wanted to get a away before out main hols.

You will like it, not cheap, no difference in £ compared to back home in UK. Just watch out for the lucky lucky men/women selling there wares in Americas

Went about 9 years ago and yes it was rough and one of the worst places i have been for people going bonkers, the strip was a bit mad to be honest and i wouldnt go back, more the 18- 20 crowd like i was then so i would hate it now and I still go on similar type 'bar and beach' holidays now.

Maybe In Americas, but NOT at all where we stayed in between americas and christanos, was very nice, no idiots there, quite upmarket, riff raff stay in americas and can do as far as I am concerned.

theres a bar owned by gary liniker therre which is awesome.

cant remember its name though :(:

When i went there with my mum and sister we tended to do things like day trips out to the volcano and boat trips as the actual resorts are a bit manky, the shopping is alright.
