Though:
Mining blocks in corruption - use dynamite or purification powder. Eventually you can get a nightmare pickaxe or better to mine it.
Shadow orbs - in the corruption, at the bottom of the shafts.
Check out the TerrariaServer.exe inside your Terraria folder (in steamapps)

How do I get the Nightmare pick?
Kill world bosses by destroying shadow orbs to summon the eater of worlds (giant worm, easy to kill, just keep moving all the time and backtrack to avoid being targetted) or farming lenses from zombies at nighttime and then combining 10 of them at a demonic altar (found in corruption zones) to create an eye which can summon the eye of cthulu boss at night.
Both bosses drop demonite ore and shadowscales and both materials are used to make a nightmare pickaxe.
