When i connect up my 4870 to my HDTV using HDMI, the picture quality is absolutely terrible. Not sharp at all, fuzzy, wierd colours etc. Using the VGA connector it looks perfect, nice and sharp and vivid colours. Is this normal for a HDMI connection from a PC ?

Hmmm i had a similiar problem.

I bought a 4870 x 2 Powercolor and hooked it up via a DVI -> HDMI and then had a HDMI cable to back of the LCD.

I was hugely disappointed! Only recently have i had a little success.

I rang up philips (well to be honest he was useless) but you have to go down the road regardless. He said that screen doesnt support 1080p, and said that 720p was best resolution.

So i changed the settings in Catalyst,

Under DTV tab, make sure pixel format is RGB 4:4:4: Full RGB PC standard
Decrease the resolution, mines at 1360 x 768 (bare in mind i have a 32" LCD)
Under attributes i used Image scaling Enable GPU scaling (scale image to full panel szie)

And tweaking some of the colour and hue etc etc.

Im still not happy about it and never had so much hassle with video card before.

The major problem was that red were pinks, txt was blurry and dark, pictures looked weird.

ALso try updating firmware on your LCD, and make sure youve got latest drivers installed, version 9.1 now i think. *as of 09/02/2009

Doubt it if any of that will help because i think mine was a unique problem

if your running your res higher than your panel res then yes the picture won't look sharp. if your tv is 720p u should run it at 1360x768..

my tv is 720p and when in hdmi mode i have to run it at exactly 1280x720 or it runs it in 1080i mode not p and geta fuzzy unclear picture, its only when in dvi -> vga that i can run it at
1360x768

I was in the same boat, I gave up in the end and went back to dongle.. Picture is crisp with 720p Samsung 37".

Think the graphic card people need to make this more user friendly as every one is no longer buying monitors, they just by a LCD/Plasma from upermarket for £300

But hey they look great when working

This does seem to be one area where a 1080p set is a real advantage. Seen loads of problems (and had them myself) driving 720p screens at native res from a PC whereas 1920x1080 "just works" 99% of the time.

also to remember some tvs have 2-3 hdmi ports, u may need to connect it to port 2 or 3 to get right..

i had a samsung tv which had 3 hdmi ports and the manuel said if im connecting a computer via hdmi it must be in port 2.. i tryed it in port 1 and 3 the picture was blurry but in port 2 it was perfect.

LCD or plasma?

I used to have my old 4870 connected via HDMI to a HDTV and the picture was perfect. You need to read your TV manual to see if your set has a 1:1 pixel mapping HDMI port. If not then VGA is the next best one to use. The reason why you need 1:1 is that means your HDTV is capable of scaling pixels for non std resolutions like 1360x768 with 3 blank pixels either side(your HDTV will do either 1366x768 @ 60Hz or 1920x1080 @ 30Hz). Otherwise it looks blurry as your not using the native resolution so dependent on the HDTV built in scaler (which are usually very poor compared to gfx card scalers). Thats why VGA looks sharper as your HTDV will be able to output the gfx card @ 1360x768 which is very close to the native res of 1366x768 @ 60Hz (you lose 3 pixels either side but its not noticeable anyway).

I have this same problem with my media centre and ATI 3200 series onboard graphics. Is this caused by drivers or just the way how some HDTV's are with graphics cards set to 1920x1080?
My TV is 27" 1080i (not P) running my media centre at 1920x1080 its fuzzy, 1280x720 is crystal clear. Yet running my 360 and PS3 at 1080 on the same HDTV through HDMI its also crystal clear. Do people running Nvidia graphics cards through HDMI also have this problem?

your tv nature res is 1280x768 or 1360x768, setting it to 1920x1080 will make it look fuzzy, because its over your nature res.

1080p tv's have a nature res at 1920x1080

I had a look in my HDTV manual, and it says not to connect a PC up using HDMI as it will give a black screen. Well, i dont get a black screen, just awful picture quality, on all resolutions lol. Looks like they want me to stick to using the VGA port, which only supports 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1360x768. Guess this TV just dont like PC's that much :( Thanks anyway guys.

u only get 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1360x768 res's because your tv panel is only 1360x768 max.

only 1080P tv's have a resolution of 1920x1080.

So my TV is crap for PC HDMI connections, but im curious......

Do most HDTV's nowadays produce the same image quality over HDMI as a normal DVI connection would ?

Ive got a phillips too and its native res is 1360x768. i can still up scale the res to 1080p but 720p is a better resolution. To the op on some phillips lcd tv you have the option setting a PC or HD option.

Is it a samsung by chance? My mate had to use the "scan" option in the tv menu to get scaling correct @ 1360x768.
