so i installed it once on my newish Opty 170 and put on AS3 (my old paste) at stock volts and my temp would rise above 50C under load, right now im at 1.4v and idle temps sittiing at 50c which is pretty lousy

Pretty bad temps arent they?, i reseated it and this time put the paste that came with the heatsink on it.. i made sure it was making good contact.

i also managed to bend one of the fins accidentily with the screwdriver as i didnt have much room the first time i reseated it.. i bent it back though..

Oh btw, im using the YS-tech 120mm 125CFM fan that i also bought from ocuk.

i was looking at removing the IHS but that might be more trouble than the worth of it because i also have to file down the bracket.

what can i do here?

Well my 146 was the same case.

At 1.6v 3Ghz it would run 50oC load, I removed the IHS and now its 33oC load. Under Water cooling.

DC will run hotter but that is very excessive, if u have tryed other paste and check mount then may be the IHS should be removed.

my 170 hits 40 degrees load at 1.376v with a xp120 and a vantec stealth (27cfm). could be a bad connection between the ihs. Try some new artic silver and reseat

also the dual cores run far hotter than the single cores like the 146. My 170 is running hotter than my 3700 did at 1.55v

ive reseated once i dont think that is the problem, im sure i did it right the first 2 times.

if i remove the ihs ( which is hard for me anyway cos i have bad nerves ) then i need to file the bracket down properly.. i dunno if i can do that, i dont want to screw anything up

I personally wouldnt remove the ihs as all warranty is void and its a fairly big job getting the xp120 to fit well after. Have also heard of a few people cracking the cores after. It might solve your problem though if you have bad contact between the ihs and the core. Jokester has done a good guide if your unsure

Anything under 60 is ok. How is your case/motherboard temp?

I installed a vent/fan in my side panel to blow air on to the cpu cooler that helped a great deal. Also make sure you fan is blowing onto the cpu not sucking.

The dfi board is well known to give inaccurate cpu temps. Is the cooler warm to touch?

Matt

if it is known dfi boards show inaccurate temps how come other ppl with the same processor, board, heatsink and fan that doesnt spin as fast have much cooler temps than mine?

o and i tried for like 15 mins to remove the ihs, i cant seem to get it off.. cant get the stanley knife under properly and i tried pretty hard

To remove the ihs the best tool is an old fashioned razor blade with one blade edge protected so you get to keep your fingers! See the sticky on the cpu page. Take massive care not to bend any pins on the chip.

One other thing - I found the base on my xp120 was far from flat so I lapped it myself using different grades of abrasive paper until flat and smooth. You may also find the ihs has the same problem. If you decide to leave it on you will have to decide if you want to lap it and lose the info off it - thinking resale here.

Also I've seen a mthod where using a fine piece of thread to wear away at the seal stuff on the corners of the IHS, then use a blade to go down the sides is a good idea.

Going to take mine off soon I think, 1.55v needed for 3Ghz and it gets too hot then :(
