Terror Plot Foiled

I'm not sure that the US would go down the toilet as such but certainly it would have a major affect on the value of the dollar. It would make American exports relatively very cheap but it would also mean things they imported were very expensive. It could be "the making" of America as they would have to become something of a net exporter.

The consequences are debatable but I personally think they would be catastrophic for the US. Their trade deficit is gargantuan and without the rest of the world buying dollars to buy oil, the dollar would collapse and the US would have hyper inflation.

Note also which other countries want to trade oil in euros - countries like Iran and N. Korea - and US foreign policy suddenly becomes clear.

my father was in the navy in the falklands his ship was hit and sunk, he lost many friends. Such a pointless loss for something that didn't belong to us, nothing more than hills. Why bother? (Other than election results...)
Because the Falkland Islands were (and are) de facto sovereign British territory - Any attack on them is an attack on the Britain.

Saw a wonderful Muslim representative on Sky this morning, answering whether he sees himself as British. He explained that Islam is perfect so why does he need to be anything else, although he does have a British passport.
He then went on to say he wasn't in favour of 'innocent' deaths (note he didn't say civilian, or how a person classifies as 'innocent') and that if you wanted to know why it happened you should watch the tapes left behind by the suicide bombers.

Were the Taliban not a foreign power? And could it not be argued that SH was, since he ruled without the support of the people through corruption and force?
The Taleban was a sovereign power in a sovereign state (I think that I may be overusing that word this morning) - Military action was sanctioned there for the implicit reason of self-defence.

Iraq was a different affair altogether, and there was no sanction / legality to the invasion.

Hussein's status as a despotic tyrant is irrelevant in that context, as was the level of support that he received (although he received a fair amount, and some of it from the West).

Reading another board its seems that the baggage handlers are making the most from their oppotunity, lots are reporting stolen moblies and laptops from their luggage.

Yes, much better to pontificate and speculate than rely on the words of the bombers themselves. That way we avoid the risk of having to face any unpleasant truths and can simply carry on the War On Terror.

We should be happy that people who sympathise with suicide bombers live in this country and don't care about being british?

Email I just got from my Mum

Well I arrived in Beijing but my luggage didn't! All I have are the clothes I stand up in and my passport and purse! No handbag, no phone, no make up, no tablets, nothing at all! If you want to contact me - call Malcolm's phone. Goodness only knows whether I'll see my luggage again with all the chaos at Heathrow. I'm amazed I left the country - only two flights went out from Terminal 1 yesterday morning, and for some reason mine was one of them.

Anyway, I'll let you know when and if I receive my luggage.

Take care,

Lots of love

Harsh but apparantly they forgot to put half the people's luggage on her flight.

I didn't realise you respected the words of terrorists so much... you don't suppose that what is contained on the tapes is merely what they would like you to think...

You seem to be cynical enough of the government, why would you wish to believe terrorists?

Where did I say we should beleive them or respect their words?

You suggested that relying on the words of the bombers would result in facing 'unpleasant truths'...

If you think that they speak the truth then it follows that you are willing to accept their authority and discoure

I think the problem is that to many people are willing to think up excuses or telling us we should try to understand the terrorists. It doesn't work the only thing they are interested in is the destruction of western life.
If we are attacked by our "own" then stick them in jail for life no luxuries, just a bucket in the corner and a mattress.Sod their Human rights they don't deserve any.

I'm sorry but this is totally wrong. Who better to find out the motives than the one carrying out the attack?

Obviously they may be lying, but then the only way to know is to listen to what they say and wiegh it up with the realities.

No i didnt. I said there was a 'risk of' having to face unpleasant truths. But without listening we'll never know, will we?

Dont put words in other people's mouths - dishonesty will rarely win an argument.

Except that I dont necessarily think thay speak the truth. But we certainly shouldnt ignore what they say because they are terrorists.

Know thy enemy.

But we dont know that to be true, do we? For all we know the (suspected) bombers could be protesting against evicted housemates being reintroduced to Big Brother ;)

Find out their motives, and (if appropriate) remove them.

Silly Visage, why do you want to know the reason they attack us? Don't you just want to kill them all like the rest of us??

So many sarcastic responses I could put to this one, but all I would say is that Visage and @if seem to see suicide bombers with a legitimacy that many of us do not...

Where did I say suicide bombing was a legitimate activity?

Im assuming you can come up with a quote - after all, you wouldnt make something up to score cheap points. Would you?

Why belive the word of a killer unless you believe in the justification of their acts?

If I ask Charles Manson why he killed people, will he automatically tell me the truth or what he wants me to hear?

Obviously they may be lying, but then the only way to know is to listen to what they say and wiegh it up with the realities.

I didn't suggest that we should not examine, I suggested that their testimony is unreliable and taking it as red is a victory for extremists.
