Tesco Opening Hours

Ahh yeah good point, the Tesco Express near me opens until 23:00 as well - wonder how they get away with it. It used to be a Budgens which closed at 4pm.

It's down to floor space IIRC anything over a certain area has the limited opening hours

Wikipedia agrees.

Some categories of large shop are exempt from the Sunday Trading Act 1994:
Airport shops
Chemists
Goods from exhibitions stalls
Farm shops that sell their own produce
Petrol filling stations
Railway stations
Motorway service stations were excluded from the act
Small shops with a floor area of under and up to 280 square metres (3,000 square feet) may open if they wish to.

As said by others, thankfully Scotland doesn't have Sunday trading laws. So our 24 hour Tesco stores open on the 3rd of Jan and shut on the 23rd of Dec.

same problem for me this morning, they *just* changed it to browse from 10:30 and pay at 11am... I had managed to get in at 10am due to confusion by some staff opening doors. Then a security guard told me to leave my trolley and either get out until 10:30 or go upstairs (cafe/elec items).

Of course the problem then was trying to pay at 11am along with everyone else that had spent an hour shopping for a few items.

All of the big Tesco stores around here changed to 11-5 about 3 months ago. There were big signs and leaflets throughout the car parks/stores.

Wife phoned me at work this morning for a chat because she went to our local Tesco that says outside "open at 10" and it doesn't open till 11. All the other people standing around outside didn't realise either.

Why do we have such strict opening hours on a sunday?

Despite what some may say its nothing to do with god or religion.

Obviously there was a complete lack of info in the store leading up to the change so there were quite a few people standing around just waiting until it opened

I wouldn't make this assumption. I used to work in a supermarket and I often worked in the mornings on weekends. Every week, there was a small crowd of people outside waiting for the store to open.

You get proper 24/7 in Scotland?

Annoying, why do we still have this stupid rule in England. Have attendances figures for church been affected in anyway? A lot of people only get the weekend to do their shopping.

Late night shopping, while great, is also annoying at times.

There shelves are all being restocked so you can barely walk due to all the restocking trolleys.
There are no checkouts open so you have to use the self-service checkout (I HATE those machines).
There is no staff around so when you buy alcohol though the self service machine you have to wait 10min for some lazy staff member to finally come and tell the machine that you are over 18.

This country needs to get with the times and have proper late night stores (what's the use of all the department stores in the centre closing at 5.30pm when I finish work at 5pm?)
