Test new hard drives?

I've just purchased 4 x 2TB Samsung F4's to use in a new HP Proliant Microserver. I'm going to set them up in Raid 5 but wondered if there is there a program I should use to test them first, before putting all my media onto them?

Also, was there somthing about these drives needing a firmware upgrade..what was that for, and will it affect me?

You can always use the samsung estool to test them first if you want, but typically they'll either work or they won't.

Quickly googled firmware and found this not run into this issue myself, so no idea whther its likely to be an issue on new drives. It might be that more recently manufactured drives already have the fix applied.

Drives manufactured in 2011 should have the new firmware.
