Testing LAN Speed

Hi Everyone

I was hoping someone would be able to suggest how I can test my network speed.

Ideally, I would like to transfer a large file from one pc to another, or from a server to a client, and see how fast the transfer/download is going.

Is there any way to see the speed just like when you download a file from a website?

Grab something like ISPMonitor (free, Google for it) and you can view the transfer speed of any network transfer.

While copying a large ammount of data from my PC to my NAS, what sort of upstream speed should I be getting from a gigabit (1000 base-t) connection (in KB/s)?

Dunno but it will be limited by the speed of the slowest hard drive and not the speed of the network all things being equal!
