testing to see if it works

i bought these parts:

Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.50GHz (800FSB) - Retail

MSI P31 Neo-F V2 Intel P31 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Western Digital Caviar Blue 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (WD1600AAJS)

Akasa AK-ZEN-01-WH Rev.4 Zen Case - White (No PSU)

OCZ Platinum Revision 2 XTC 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)

Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7200S 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Silver) - OEM

i got it all set and put together but the thing doesn't power up. I tried taking everything apart and then putting all back together but still no luck. I got the motherboard and ram RMA so they shouldn't be the problem, i got a new psu so that can't be the problem.

So i'm thinking it might be the case, so is there a way to test that :confused:

btw has anyone got a picture on how they connected the front panel wires, im pretty sure i got it right but who know might have got it wrong

Try taking the motherboard out of the case and lay it on an anti-static bag, test see if it works then, if it does then there must be something on the board that is touching the case and shorting it.

did you use the standoffs in the case otherwise as said above it would be shorting out

The outside of the bag is not Anti static. Better off doing it on a piece of cardboard or even wood. I usually fix standoffs to the board and then put it on a piece of cardboard to bench test.

well if you need to ask what the standoffs are then presume you didnt use them?

Usually the standoffs are little brass fittings to seperate your motherboard from the case to prevent shorting the motherborad. As said above try it outside the case ontop of an antostatic bag and see what happens from there.

I once borked a MoBo but attaching it directly to the case.
From then on, I used either the foam inlay or the sponge one that the MoBo comes with. Worked perfectly.

However, I now use the spacers.

matthewhotdude - he might know them by another name (spacers?) or just know them by sight without knowing the name.

These are the mounts:

They site between the motherboard and the metal backing plate.
the MoBo screws screw directly into them.

finally got it to work

The motherboard was screwed on without the spacers and that was shorting the motherboard. So i used the spacers so it's all good now.

lets just hope when you tried to boot up with out the standofffs and it shorted the board, nothing will come of it later on down the line
