Tethering killing battery?

So, recently the battery on my 3GS has been dying horribly quickly whether in standby, wifi off, plane mode etc and I'm at a loss. Lots of people seem to be having issues since 4.0x with battery life but nobody has a definitive answer.

Just now I've noticed that Internet tethering appears to be trying to do something. I've never used or tried to use it but the 'working' wheel beside it is constantly going. There are no options to stop it. Is this killing my battery and how do I stop it?

How do you normally tether? I always tether using USB so charge at the same time, never bother to tether using BlueTooth and always have BlueTooth and Internet tethering off if I am not using them.
